All of us have a little trouble buttoning our jeans during winter and after the holidays. Many of us have often thought that it would be nice to have liposuction to remove the excess fat and start over again by watching our diet and exercising. However traditional old time liposuction is a traumatic surgical procedure which is painful and with a prolonged recovery. Worse, a large percentage of people who have old time liposuction end up with lumps bumps, divots and irregularities on the skin after liposuction.

I have been using tumescent laser liposuction with the new SlimLipo laser lipo technique for fat removal, laser body sculpting and laser liposculpture for almost a year now and I am amazed at how much better the tumescent laser liposuction technique is than the old time non-laser liposuction method. My patients have smooth tight skin after laser liposuction, and their recovery after laser lipo is much easier and less painful.

The benefit of the new tumescent laser liposuction technique is that the laser melts the fat before it is removed, making fat removal much easier with laser lipo. The tumescent technique minimizes bleeding and discomfort. The laser also tightens the skin as the fat is melted. The result is more uniform fat removal, smooth skin, less bleeding and less pain after tumescent laser liposuction. See before and after pictures of tumescent laser liposuction and mini tummy tuck below:

What Is Tumescent Laser Liposuction?

Tumescent laser liposuction is a new liposuction method that combines the use of tumescent solution with laser melting of fat before fat removal.

Tumescent solution is a liquid that contains an anesthetic or numbing solution and a vasoconstrictor, a medication that helps control bleeding. The tumescent solution is injected beneath the skin, into the fat to be removed, before the laser liposuction or laser lipo is started.

The tumescent solution numbs the skin area for pain control which can last up to 24 hours. The solution also prevents bleeding which reduces post laser liposuction bruising and swelling, which speeds recovery.
The tumescent solution is injected under pressure, which swells or distends the fat and makes removal easier. The distention and hydration (adding water to) of the fat also improves the effectiveness and safety of the laser treatment to dissolve the fat.
The benefits of the tumescent laser liposuction technique are:

•	Excellent pain control
•	Less bleeding and bruising
•	More effective fat removal
•	Less risk of skin irregularities after liposuction

Before and after tumescent laser liposuction of neck and chin implant to correct double chin

How Is the Tumescent Laser Liposuction Treatment Done?

Tumescent laser liposuction may be done with you awake or asleep. Many areas can be treated with you awake using only the local anesthesia provided by the tumescent solution. However, the benefits of tumescence are so important that tumescent solution is also used when laser liposuction is done under general anesthesia, for control of bleeding, improved fat removal and for post operative pain management.

After your skin has been cleansed with a sterile anti-bacterial soap, the skin area to be liposuctioned is sterilely draped to prevent contamination.

Tiny punctures are made in hidden areas of the skin, and a small needle inserted beneath the skin into the fat to be removed. The tumescent solution is then injected into the fat under pressure to swell the fat and deliver the anesthetic and vasoconstrictor (prevents bleeding) solution.

After a brief waiting period until your skin is numb and the tumescent fluid has taken effect, the laser fiber is inserted through the same puncture sites and the fat is melted with the laser. The fat is liquefied into a thin liquid which is much easier to remove than fat that is removed with traditional old time liposuction.

After the fat has been liquefied, a small tube called a cannula is inserted and the liquid fat removed by suction. Because the fat has been liquefied, much smaller cannulas can be used than with traditional non-laser liposuction. This fact results in a less traumatic procedure with tiny hidden scars, very different from old time liposuction.

The laser also tightens the skin as the fat is lased. The laser heats the fibers that attach your skin to your body, and causes these fibers to shorten which pulls the skin closer to the body. Microscopic studies have shown that many more fibers, called connective tissue, are left after laser liposuction than after non-laser liposuction. I believe that this fact helps explain the improved skin tightening and smooth skin after laser liposuction.

Before and after SlimLipo tumescent laser liposuction to smooth skin deformities caused by prior old time non-laser liposuction

How Will I Feel After Tumescent Laser Liposuction?

Because the tumescent laser liposuction technique places numbing solution in the liposuction area, you will have very little discomfort immediately after and up to 12 hours after your laser liposuction procedure. In addition you will be given strong pain killers to manage any discomfort.

The second day you will feel discomfort in the treated areas, however in my experience, the level of discomfort is certainly much less than that experienced with traditional non-laser liposuction. By day 3 most patients are very comfortable.

You will be wearing a supportive compression garment on the treated areas which adds additional support and comfort.
You will be up and around, able to eat, walk, use the bathroom and do normal daily activities the day after your tumescent laser liposuction. I recommend that you not go to the gym or do vigorous physical activity for the first week to ten days because I want the healing process to be undisturbed during this time.

How Long Is the Recovery after Tumescent Laser Liposuction?

You will be active and walking from day one. However I will limit your vigorous exercise and weight lifting or aerobics for ten days.
Your garment will be changed to a light Spanks type garment after three to five days. If small sutures are used to close the small puncture sites they will be removed at day five.

When small areas like the chin or a minor tummy liposuction are done, some people return to work the next day. I do not recommend returning to work the same day-I want you to be quiet and rest the first day.

Recovery to a more normal skin appearance can take ten days to two weeks for swelling and bruising, if any, to resolve.

Your skin appearance, skin tightening and laser liposuction result will continue to improve for three to six months as the skin gradually tightens over the areas where fat has been removed. The remarkable thing about the tumescent laser liposuction technique is that the skin is much smoother after laser liposuction than after traditional old time, non-laser liposuction. I believe that the laser dissolving of the fat prior to removal results in a more uniform fat removal.

Which Laser is best for Tumescent Laser Liposuction?

There are several lasers in use for laser liposuction. I use the SlimLipo Aspire laser liposuction system made by Palomar Medical. I have chosen this laser because the SlimLipo uses the only laser wavelength which is specifically absorbed by fat. The SlimLipo uses a 924nm (nm=nanometers, one millionth of a meter and describes the wavelength of the laser color in the visible light spectrum, which for 924nm is yellow, the color of fat) laser wavelength.

The 924nm laser wavelength used in SlimLipo dissolves or releases three to five times as much fat during lasing as do the other commonly used wavelengths. The other wavelengths used by different laser liposuction machines target water, not fat, and are less efficient and less specific at fat dissolving.

The 924nm SlimLipo also works very well in hydrated fat, meaning that fat dissolving with the laser works very well after the tumescent fluid has been injected.

How Do I Find a Surgeon for My Tumescent Laser liposuction?

I am a board certified plastic surgeon, thus I am very prejudiced that you should have your tumescent laser liposuction performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. My view is that if you are going to have surgery of any kind, you want a board certified surgeon who has been fully trained and is expert at taking care of a surgical patient. You want the safety of knowing that if something goes wrong, your doctor will have the skill, experience and training to take care of you.

Some dermatologists do liposuction and are trained in liposuction and lasers. If you wish to have a dermatologist do your laser liposuction, I recommend that you make certain that your dermatologist is board certified and has had a fellowship in dermatologic surgery.

I recommend that you visit the following links to learn more about liposuction surgery and how to check out your doctors training, experience and board certification status:

What Questions Should I Ask the Doctor About Tumescent Laser Liposuction?

Do not be intimidated by the white coat and afraid to ask the doctor important questions. You are an educated consumer, and a good doctor will welcome the fact that you are prepared and have done your reading. I prefer to have informed patients, they always do better after surgery. Plastic surgery is no place for snap decisions or impulse buying.

In my book Save Your Face, in Chapter ten, I give details on how to choose your doctor and what questions to ask. A brief summary of important questions are:

•	Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
•	How often do you do tumescent laser liposuction?
•	Do you think I am a good candidate for tumescent laser liposuction?
•	Are you comfortable operating on me with my particular goals?
•	Do you anticipate a good result-why?
•	Can you show me before and after picture of patients that you have operated on?
•	Can I speak to a patient who has had this surgery by you?
•	What are the arrangements for an emergency during nights and weekends-are you available?
•	Will my tumescent laser liposuction be done in an approved operating room or outpatient facility under standard sterile and safety precautions? Are emergency services and monitoring available if needed?

Most importantly, trust your gut feelings during your visit with the doctor. Is the office clean and professional? Do the doctor and staff treat you in a respectful manner? Ask yourself will I be comfortable calling these people and depending on them if I have an emergency at night or on weekends? Will I be comfortable expressing my concerns or disappointment if I feel that way? If you detect any discomfort or uncertainty, you should consult another doctor.

Tumescent laser liposuction is a remarkable, revolutionary advance in liposuction and fat removal techniques. The benefits can be very significant. However, the results of liposuction, like any surgical procedure are very dependent upon the skill and expertise of your surgeon. Choose wisely and I expect that you will have a very happy result.

One of the most frustrating things for people who have had liposuction treatments, body sculpting or liposculpture is the appearance of lumps, bumps and depressions or wavy lines in the skin which appear on the skin often six months or a year after the liposuction treatment. These skin irregularities are called contour deformities and are quite common following traditional liposuction and liposculpture body contouring surgery. Some studies have shown that as many as 20% of people who have had liposculpture or suction body contouring treatments have contour deformities after healing.

Before on left note contour deformities left by a prior liposuction done elesewhere without the laser. On the right notice the smooth contour of the tummy area after laser liposcution technique.

Another common problem is loose skin left after liposculpture surgery. New laser assisted liposuction treatments can be used to correct contour deformities and smooth the skin. Let’s first understand what causes lumps, bumps and skin irregularities after liposculpture and traditional suction methods.

What causes contour deformities, lumps, bumps, swelling and loose skin after liposuction surgery ?

In the traditional liposuction procedure without the laser a metal tube is placed beneath the skin and fat is suctioned out with a powerful suction machine. Since the surgeon has no direct vision of the uniformity of fat removal, often small pieces or lumps of fat are missed or left behind. These areas of fat that are not removed become visible bumps, lumps or swellings after healing and can appear as skin irregularities called contour deformities on the skin after the body sculpting procedure.

Sometimes the fat removal tube, called a cannula, is placed too close to the underside of the skin and too much fat is removed. If this happens a depression or divot appears on the skin where too much tissue was removed. This divot can create a wavy line or depression or divot in the skin beside any lump, bump or swelling that has been left behind.

Following the removal of fat from beneath your skin, the skin must tighten down over the tummy, hip or other area where fat beneath the skin has been removed. Skin naturally shrinks after weight loss or pregnancy. However as we age our skin loses elasticity and does not tighten as well after fat has been removed from beneath the skin.

In people with less skin elasticity, usually older people or people who are obese or overweight, the skin does not tighten after the surgical treatment. These patients are left with loose sagging skin as well as lumps, bumps and swelling, on the tummy, hips and thighs after suction body contouring. Many people feel these skin deformities look as bad as or worse than the area looked before surgery.

How does laser liposuction prevent skin irregularities and loose skin after surgery?

The laser melts or liquefies the fat beneath the skin into a thin liquid during the treatment. A tiny laser fiber is inserted beneath the skin and fat melting is done before any suction is used to remove fat. Since the fat has been converted to a thin liquid, removal is much easier than with traditional liposculpture techniques. Very tiny cannulas can be used to aspirate or remove the liquid fat. Because larger high pressure cannulas are not used, it is unusual to remove too much fat, or isolated chunks of tissue from beneath the skin, so divots and depressions are less likely.

Because the laser fiber melts the fat, it is very easy to move through the tissues, which is much less traumatic to the skin during the treatment. Because the procedure is gentle, in my opinion a more accurate and complete procedure is possible. In my experience I have not seen lumps or bumps of fat left behind after this new high tech method for fat removal and liposculpture.

The heat from the laser also tightens the skin as the fat is removed. Skin tightening prevents loose skin post operatively. This new treatment has produced remarkable skin tightening in even older patients who have had significant fat removal.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Surgical fat removal is not a solution for obesity or being overweight. Only proper nutritional dieting, exercise, or gastric bypass surgery can correct morbid obesity.

These surgical methods for fat removal and body contouring are best suited for people who are fit, not significantly overweight and have small areas of extra fat in specific parts of the body. Some fat pockets simply cannot be removed with diet and exercise. These are called deep or brown fat and are specialized fat cells that store nutrition that can be used during periods of starvation.

There are very typical areas where these fat deposits occur and the areas are different in men and women. In men, these fat deposits occur in the tummy area and around the waist, often called the spare tire. In women, these extra fat deposits occur typically in the hips and thigh areas. Both men and women develop fat under the chin on the neck, often referred to as the double chin.

Younger people with good skin elasticity and localized fat deposits in the areas mentioned above will have the best results following suction body contouring treatments.

Who should do my liposuction treatment?

My strong recommendation is that you consult two plastic surgeons that are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You can visit their website to find a plastic surgeon in your area. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons also have very informative websites. The American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery is an organization to which most plastic surgeons that specialize in laser plastic surgery belong.

If you are interested in sculpting a new body and are a good candidate, the remarkable new light based liposuction is something you should investigate. See before and after pictures of laser liposuction results in other body areas.

All of us want to lose belly fat and have a flat stomach but most of us can’t exercise and diet enough to lose belly fat and get a flat stomach. Laser liposuction with the SlimLipo laser is a new procedure that can melt belly fat and tighten stomach skin. As we age our body metabolism slows and it is much harder to lose belly fat. Without regular vigorous exercise of our abdominal muscles, and weight control we often develop a protruding abdomen or pot belly.

Women who have had multiple pregnancies have great difficulty losing belly fat and getting back their flat stomach. I often see fit, healthy and active women in my office who have tried very hard and cannot lose belly fat caused by pregnancy. The abdominoplasty or tummy tuck can create a flat stomach, but most people do not want surgery.

Laser liposuction or laser body sculpting is a new way to lose belly fat and have a flat stomach. Laser liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss and a healthy active lifestyle. However, laser liposuction is an effective, less invasive procedure that can approach tummy tuck results in many people. The results of laser liposuction can be remarkable-see before and after pictures of laser liposuction and mini-tuck below:

What Causes Belly Fat and Fat Stomach

There are several components that cause a fat stomach, pot belly, or loose tummy. Laser liposuction can remove belly fat from under the skin and achieve skin tightening of loose tummy skin. However laser liposuction cannot tighten your stomach muscles or abdominal muscles. To tighten the stomach muscles you will need to do stomach exercises or abdominal work outs.

Laser liposuction also cannot remove fat inside your abdomen-intra-abdominal fat, called mesenteric fat- which is wrapped around your intestine. If you are very overweight or obese, only significant dieting will help you lose belly fat that is inside your abdomen.

The several causes of belly fat or a fat tummy or pot belly are:

•	Intra-abdominal Fat-Fat serves a very important survival function. Fat stores energy to provide nutrition during periods when we do not have adequate food intake. Thus fat is a survival mechanism during periods of starvation. Fat is stored inside the abdomen in a structure called the mesentery. The mesentery is wrapped around our intestines and supports the intestines. Huge amounts of fat can be present in the mesentery when we are overweight or obese. When there is excess intra-abdominal fat in the mesentery, the fat actually pushes out and stretches the muscles of our abdominal wall and creates a fat belly. Only dieting or caloric restriction can cause the intra-abdominal fat to be used for energy production and disappear.

•	Abdominal Wall Laxity-The abdominal muscles (abdominal wall), called the abs, hold our intestines and abdominal contents in the abdomen. These muscles can become stretched and loose after extensive weight gain, pregnancy, and inactivity. When the abdominal muscles, or abdominal wall loses tone, becomes stretched or lax, the contents of the inside of the abdomen push the abdominal wall forward and create a fat tummy or pot belly. Tightening of the abdominal wall, that is, restoring the tone of the abdominal or tummy muscles can only be achieved with ab exercises and conditioning of the tummy muscles or with abdominoplsty or tummy tuck surgery.

•	Subcutaneous Fat beneath the Belly Skin- The fat directly beneath the skin on the belly also stores fat. This fat is called the subcutaneous (beneath the skin) fat and is normally about ½ inch thick in most people. When we gain weight and have excess fat, this subcutaneous fat layer becomes thicker, sometimes up to 4 or 5 inches thick. Laser liposuction is a very effective technique to remove subcutaneous fat. The heat from the laser melts the fat into a thin liquid which is easily removed by suction through very small tubes called cannulas.

•	Loose Belly Skin-Multiple pregnancies and repeated weight gain stretch the abdominal skin and create loose belly or tummy skin. The major breakthrough in laser liposuction is the ability of the laser to tighten stomach skin. Previous liposuction techniques removed fat but left loose belly or tummy skin after fat removal. With laser liposuction, the heat from the laser tightens the skin during the laser fat dissolving process.

Laser Liposuction to Lose Belly Fat and Flatten the Stomach

Because the laser liposuction fiber dissolves fat into a thin liquid, removal of fat is much easier. This allows the surgeon to use very tiny tubes or cannulas to suction the fat out of the tummy skin. As a result very tiny holes, usually placed inside the belly button, are all that is required. This means very tiny, almost invisible scars. In addition, in my experience, following laser liposuction the skin is left smooth without the lumps, bumps and contour deformities often seen with traditional liposuction. See before and after pictures of Laser Liposuction below:

Skin tightening following this new technique has been truly remarkable in my experience. In patients who are fit and not overweight, I have been able to do laser body sculpting to actually reveal the outline of the abdominal muscles after healing. In the words of one of my patients “I got my six pack back.”

My patients seem to recover more quickly after this new procedure. Many say they feel fine the day after the procedure. However, I ask my patients not to return to vigorous or strenuous activity or work outs for at least two weeks.

Which Laser is Best?

I have been very happy with the SlimLipo machine I have been using. The SlimLipo uses a 924nm laser wavelength which is 3-5 times more specifically absorbed by fat than other wavelengths. For technical reasons, higher fat absorption by fat, in my opinion, results in more effective fat dissolving. The SlimLipo also has a blended 924/975nm wavelength which is more effective for skin tightening. I am also sure that other wavelengths do work for fat dissolving and skin tightening, but I am very impressed with the results I see with the 924nm and mixed 924/975nm wavelengths.

How to Choose a Surgeon

I admit up front that I am prejudiced in my opinion because I am a board certified plastic surgeon. Liposculpture with or without the laser is a surgical procedure and as with heart surgery, brain surgery or any other type of surgery, if I am having surgery I am going to do my homework and find the best board certified surgeon I can find to perform my operation.

Board certified plastic surgeons spend many years in training and have to have several years of experience and have to demonstrate their knowledge, experience and skill to pass their board examinations. Surgery is a technical, manual as well as intellectual task, and most doctors that possess these fine motor qualities are drawn to surgical training and specialty.

There are also doctors who are not board certified plastic surgeons that are skilled and experienced at this technique, most commonly board certified dermatologists trained in dermatologic surgery. Just do your homework and make certain your doctor is trained and experienced.

I always recommend that patients do the following when considering plastic surgery:

•	Consult 2 board certified surgeons
•	Ask the doctor how experienced he/she is at the procedure you are considering
•	Ask to see photos of their surgical results
•	Ask to speak to one of their patients who have had the surgery
•	Go online and check the doctor’s credentials
•	Ask your family doctor about the reputation and skill of the doctor you are considering
•	Ask your friends about the reputation of the doctor
•	Read about the procedure you are considering-an excellent resource is The American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Plastic surgery can create very beautiful results when the proper procedure is done on a properly selected appropriate patient. If you are considering any type of plastic surgery do your homework. Read more about the procedure you are interested in. Study the bio and credentials of the board certified plastic surgeons in your area. Be an informed consumer.

An educated patient has the best chance of obtaining a happy and satisfying result. The websites of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) have excellent, honest information. By visiting these websites you can learn about the various procedures and find board certified plastic surgeons in your area.

Laser liposuction is a new procedure so there is not much information about problems, risks, and complications that has been published. There is great excitement about the new laser liposuction technology and most of what you hear about laser liposuction is about the benefits. In time we will se published results of risks and complications, after a larger clinical experience with laser liposuction has been achieved

Much of the marketing for laser liposuction, laser liposculpture and laser body sculpting give the impression that the new procedure is a safe, risk free, painless and quick procedure. I have read and heard claims that you can have your procedure done under local anesthesia, lose your fat, tighten your skin, and go on with your life, even back to work, the same day. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is-we all know that.

The perception that laser liposuction is easy to do has also encouraged some professionals without surgical training or no formal training in aesthetic surgery to offer this this new procedure to patients in their practice or Spa.

While I enthusiastically support laser liposuction as a revolutionary new advance in plastic surgery, it is still a surgical procedure. All surgical procedures have risks and the potential for complications.

Many of the risks of laser liposuction are those associated with any traditional suction procedure. However, the introduction of heat by the laser during liposuction poses some newer potential complications. If the fiber is placed too close to the skin for too long, or one area is treated to aggressively, there is risk of thermal injury, a burn can occur.

Risks of Laser Liposuction

•	Skin Burns-Laser liposuction utilizes laser energy to heat fat and liquefy fat. This makes fat removal easier. In my experience with laser liposuction skin burns are very rare and are easily avoided by proper technique.

•	Skin Loss-Too aggressive use of the laser too near the skin can create a burn and the overlying skin can be damaged and lost. Again, technique and experience are key to avoiding this complication.

•	Bleeding-In my experience bleeding is less with new laser liposuction procedure than with standard liposuction. But bleeding can occur as with any surgical procedure.

•	Infection-Infection can occur with any invasive procedure. Since the laser fiber is inserted underneath the skin, sterile operating room precautions and antibiotic coverage are necessary.

•	Anesthetic Risks-Several well publicized deaths after liposculpture and suction body contouring were caused by overdose of lidocaine, the anesthetic used to control pain during the procedure. Training and experience are keys to avoiding this.

•	Contour Deformities-Wavy lines, depressions and lumps or bumps in the skin occur in 20% of standard liposuction patients. These contour deformities are caused by irregular fat removal and fat removal too close to the surface of the skin. In my experience contour deformities are much less common with new laser assisted procedure. I believe this is because fat is dissolved by the laser and fat removal is less traumatic.

•	Loose Skin-Loose skin after liposculpture or laser body sculpting and fat removal has always been the major drawback to high volume fat removal in older patients with poor skin elasticity. The major advance with the new laser assisted procedure is that the heat from the laser tightens the skin. In my experience loose skin is very uncommon with the new procedure. However, technique and experience are important to avoid loose skin after fat removal.

•	Inexperienced or untrained Doctor-Specialized surgical training, technical skill, aesthetic knowledge and judgment, and experience are necessary to achieve a good result in any type of surgery. This is especially true in an aesthetic procedure like laser body sculpting where results are visible and the surgery is purely elective. Only a medical license is required to perform cosmetic surgery in this country. If you are considering liposculpture or body contouring surgery, do your homework and check out the credentials of your surgeon.

Major Benefits

I do enthusiastically endorse the new laser assisted technique as a revolutionary advance in technology. The laser technique is the only one I now use in my practice. Results of laser liposuction for double chin removal and laser tummy tuck are remarkable, see before and after pictures below.

The advantages are very clear in my anecdotal experience and are:

•	Skin Tightening
•	Smoother skin
•	Less bleeding
•	Less trauma
•	Quicker recovery

I predict that this new technique will set the standard for liposculpture and body contouring results in the future.

All of us want to eliminate our double chin. New laser liposuction technology can melt neck fat and tighten neck skin to eliminate your double chin. See results of this remarkable new technology in the before and after photos of my patient 4 days after small chin implant and laser liposuction for double chin removal below:

How Does laser Liposuction Eliminate Double Chin?

Our double chin is inherited and consists of excess fat and loose skin below our chin. New laser liposuction can melt the fat beneath the chin into a liquid that is easily removed. Unlike regular liposuction, laser liposuction also tightens the skin as the fat is melting. This skin tightening draws the skin back into a nice contour beneath the chin.

Why is Laser Liposuction Different From Regiular Liposuction?

In laser liposuction a small laser fiber is placed beneath the skin and the laser beam heats the fat and skin. This heat not only dissolves the fat but the skin tightens in response to being heated. Thus unlike after normal liposuction, the skin is tightened and not left loose. Laser liposuction melts the fat into a thin liquid that is easy to remove. Regular liposuction is more traumatic as larger fat particles are pulled out by suction. Laser liposuction is ideal for laser body sculpting and liposculpture.

How Long Does Laser Liposuction Elimination of Double Chin Take?

The laser liposuction double chin elimination procedure can be done in less than an hour.

Does the Laser liposuction Elimination of Double Chin Hurt?

Elimination of the double chin with laser liposuction is done with a local anesthetic and is easily tolerated.

When can I Go Back To Work after laser Liposuction Removal of My Double Chin?

I place a chin strap over the double chin area which has to be worn for 2 or 3 days. If you are comfortable wearing it you can go back to work. If you have the procedure on Friday you certainly can take the chin strap off on Monday and go back to work.

The new laser liposuction techniques are a vast improvement over traditional methods. The new laser technology melts fat and tightens skin resulting in a much gentler liposculpture procedure and minimal loose hanging skin after liposuction.

Above:Before and After Laser Liposculpture Upper Abdomen and Mini Tuck Lower Abdomen.

Whether you have a double chin, tummy fat after childbirth, saddle bags, spare tire, or just little problem areas around the hips or thighs, the new laser assisted liposculpture and laser body contouring techniques may be what you are looking for.

Above: Before and After Laser Liposuction Neck, Laser Resurfacing Face, and Small Chin Implant.

Not all of the machines in use are the same. Some laser wavelengths, such as the 924nm and 924/975nm work much better than others. You need to understand which technology is best if you are considering laser liposuction.

Liposuction is the most commonly performed plastic surgery operation.

Problems Associated with Traditional Liposuction-Traditional liposuction is done by inserting a metal tube called a cannula beneath the skin into fat containing areas of the body. High pressure suction is applied and fat is suctioned out from under the skin. While the procedure works well, it is traumatic as the suction pulls out not only fat but also some of the connective tissue which holds the skin tight to the body. There are several problems which can occur after liposuction:

•	Loose Skin After Liposuction
•	Contour Deformities-Skin Irregularities
•	Prolonged Bruising
•	Difficult and Painful Recovery

How Laser Liposuction Works-During laser assisted liposuction, a very small laser fiber is inserted beneath the skin. Heat from the laser melts the fat into a thin liquid. The liquid fat is then more easily removed with very small cannulas usually only2-3 millimeters in diameter. The heat form the laser also tightens the skin, and closes many blood vessels, thus less bleeding.

Advantages of Laser Liposuction

•	Skin Tightening!!!!!!!
•	Liquefaction of Fat = Fewer Contour Deformities
•	Uniform Skin Appearance after Liposuction
•	Smaller Cannulae = Tiny Incision
•	Much Less Traumatic
•	Can Contour Visible Areas in Thinner Patients
•	Excellent for Touch Ups after standard Liposuction

Which Laser is best for Liposuction?

There are several different machines available using several different laser wavelengths-the 924nm, combined 924/975nm, the 1064nm, and the 1308nm are the most popular.

I prefer the 924nm and combination 924/975nm laser because the 924nm is very selectively absorbed by fat tissue. The 924nm liquefies 3 times as much fat as some of the other wavelengths and is also more strongly absorbed by blood vessels, which helps reduce bleeding and bruising.
The 924nm and combined 924/975nm laser is used by the SlimLipo™ laser liposuction machine made by Palomar Medical™.

Are You A Candidate for Laser Liposuction?
If you are healthy, do not smoke, and have extra fat beneath your chin, around your tummy, on your hips, thighs, arms or knees, and are relatively fit and not obese, then you are likely an excellent candidate for laser liposuction. The younger you are the better your skin tightening will be after laser liposuction. I have, however, seen good skin tightening after laser liposuction in a 70 year old person-see photo below:

•	The laser selectively dissolves fat unlike standard liposuction which can destroy all tissues in the fat layer.
•	Laser liposuction is less traumatic=quicker recovery
•	The laser fiber is tiny= smaller scars
•	Smaller areas done under local anesthesia

See Results of 924nm/975nm laser liposuction below:

All laser liposuction machines are not equal.
You need to understand the importance of the laser wavelength used to melt fat. Most laser liposuction machines on the market today use a 1064nm or 1320nm laser wavelength. Actually the best wavelength which is most highly absorbed by fat is 924nm. The newer 924nm laser is ideal for laser liposculpture and laser body sculpting.

A new 924nm and combination 924/975nm laser liposuction machine has been released which releases 5 times as much fat as the 1064nm laser and 3 times more than the 1320nm laser-the other commercially available laser liposuction technology. It is also selectively absorbed by blood. This means that the 924nm laser dissolves fat and prevents bleeding much more effectively than any other liposuction wavelengths available today. See the figure below for comparison of the fat melting selectivity of the various laser liposuction units available today:

For the patient this translates into:

•	Gentler more thorough fat removal
•	Less bleeding, less bruising
•	Quicker recovery

The doctor can also blend in a 975nm laser wavelength with the 924nm laser a combination which is highly absorbed by the Dermis-the deep layer of your skin which controls skin tightening. For the patient this means:

•	Tighter skin after liposuction

Palomar™ Medical has just introduced SLIMLIPO™ a new laser liposuction technology which will revolutionize the way liposuction is done. The word SLIMLIPO™ stands for Selective Laser Induced Melting and what is new is the laser wavelength-920 and 920/980 nm- which selectively melts fat-3 times more than SmartLipo™and 5 times more than the 1320nm laser used in the CoolLipo™ device.

In some patients with smaller fat deposits we can melt the fat with the tiny SLIMLIPO™ laser fiber and use no suction to remove the dissolved fat. This means less bruising, less trauma, and quick recovery.

New laser liposuction technology is revolutionizing the way liposuction is done. Benefits of the new laser liposuction technique are

All laser liposuction machines are not equal. You need to understand the importance of the laser wavelength used to melt fat. Most laser liposuction machines on the market today use a 1064nm or 1320nm laser wavelength. Actually the best wavelength which is most highly absorbed by fat is 920nm, a wavelength patented and owned by Palomar™ Medical in <st1 w:st="on"></st1><st1 w:st="on">Burlington</st1>, <st1 w:st="on">Massachusetts</st1>.<o></o>

Palomar has introduced the SLIMlipo™ Aspire™ Liposuction Unit which is the first 920nm based laser liposuction and is 3 times as selectively absorbed by fat as the 1064nm lasers and 2 times more than the 1320nm-the other commercially available laser liposuction technology. It is also 5 times as selectively absorbed by blood. This means that the SLIMLIPO™ Aspire™ laser liposuction unit dissolves fat and prevents bleeding much more effectively than any other laser liposuction machine available. See the figure below for comparison of the fat melting selectivity of the various laser liposuction units available today-remember, Palomar’s new SLIMLIPO uses the 920nm laser:

For you the patient this translates into:

· Gentler more thorough fat removal<o></o>

· Less bleeding, less bruising<o></o>

· Quicker recovery<o></o>

We also can blend in a 980nm laser wavelength with the Aspire™ which is highly absorbed by the Dermis-the deep layer of your skin which controls skin tightening. For you this translates into:

· Tighter skin after liposuction<o></o>

· Less risk of revisional surgery after liposuction<o></o>

I am proud to say that we helped Palomar™ develop this revolutionary new laser and are the first to offer SLIMLIPO™ with the Aspire™ laser liposuction unit in <st1 w:st="on">Massachusetts</st1> and the <st1 w:st="on"></st1><st1 w:st="on">Boston</st1> area and one of the first practices in the world to have this machine.

If you are considering laser liposuction you really need to know the facts and understand the technology. Once you do the advantages of SLIMLIPO™ with the Aspire™ system are obvious-there is nothing else like it on the market.
