This is only human nature, but as with every other aspect of your health and well being, if you took a preventative approach to your face and facial skin, you would be so much better off. Boston has so many fair skinned people of Northern European extraction, and although our northern climate affords some protection to the face, we still go to the shore in the summer and the mountains in the winter and sun exposure to the face takes its toll.

The skin of all faces begins to show aging changes in the early 30’s and if serious preventative and corrective facial and skin protection and facial rejuvenation techniques for wrinkle removal are started in our 30”s we can prevent further damage.

Those early signs of aging on the skin of the face are facial wrinkles and fine lines like crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines, worry lines, and sun spots, brown pigmentation on the cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes. These latter facial aging changes are more noticeable on the left side of the face because as we drive a car, the sun shines through the car window and hits the left side of the skin of the face.

It is never too late to start, but the earlier you start protecting and rejuvenating your face and skin the better. Remember, you are not only helping your face look younger, you are also taking steps to prevent skin cancer, so face protection is a serious health issue, not just a beauty treatment.

Modern technology and medicine have provided us with so many options to save your face that truly revolutionary preventative and non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques are available for everyone. Prevention of an aged face involves several basic steps which any of us can do ourselves without seeing a doctor and without spending a lot of money:

  1. Wear Sun Screen-every day-an SPF 30 or higher is best-re-apply every hour when at the beach or in direct sun
  2. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake-these two factors cause very serious free radical damage to your skin and are a direct cause of wrinkles on the facial skin
  3. Exercise- Moderate exercise stimulates endorphin release and has been shown to prevent aging-include both aerobic and weight training
  4. Eat a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants and low in animal fats-the average American diet causes aging and the free radical load of fatty food directly damages the facial skin and causes wrinkles and facial skin laxity and sagging.
  5. Avoid and release emotional stress-it has been proven that stress, by way of the adrenal hormone Cortisol release, accelerates aging of the whole body but also specifically the destroys the collagen in the dermis of your skin, damage that causes wrinkles and sagging facial skin. Yoga, meditation, whatever it takes, get your stress level down

None of the above is expensive and all are something you can do yourself. Remember, you want to stay healthy, young looking and feeling, and you want to avoid plastic surgery on your face.

Even if you already have facial aging changes like wrinkles, fine lines, brown spots, loose skin, jowls, marionette lines, nasal labial folds, loose neck skin, or other aging signs on the face, it is not too late to start. There are many truly revolutionary non-surgical facial rejuvenation methods available today that can reverse those facial aging changes and give you a new start without the need for costly plastic surgery. There are many non-surgical methods available including topical creams like RetinA and Vitamin C, microdermabrasion, dermasound, skin peels with Glycolic Acid, and more aggressive laser peels like microlaser peel and the ActiveFX laser peel.
  2. Stimulation of new collagen production in the facial skin- loss of the collagen in your skin is what makes the face look old. The collagen is damaged by the UV radiation of the sun and the free radicals released by an unhealthy diet and smoking and too much alcohol. Think of your skin like a fresh plump plum. Put a plum in the sun for too long, the water evaporates and you have a wrinkled prune. Sun damages your facial skin and causes the collagen to be removed, your face skin loses volume and wrinkles are formed. Non-surgical facial rejuvenation requires plumping the face skin with new collagen for effective wrinkle removal. There are many non-surgical ways to stimulate new collagen formation. Topicals like Retin A help as do all forms of exfoliation. IPL or Photo facial, new Laser treatments such as Lux1540 and Fraxel are all very beneficial.
  3. Remove Pigment and Vessels on the face- Bleaching creams, Obagi Skin Care products, microdermabrasion, IPL or Photo facial treatments can be very useful.
  4. Relax Muscles of Facial Expression-Botox removes wrinkles such as crow’s feet, worry lines, frown lines, and can be used on lip wrinkles and even be used to help the folds under the chin or neck. Hopefully we will soon have a cream that works like Botox
  5. Camouflage deep facial lines-fillers like restylane, radiesse, juvaderm, sculptra, cosmoderm, cosmoplast and other can help hide the nasal labial fold lines and marionette lines.
  6. Tighten facial skin- New technology such as LuxIR, Titan, Aluma, Refirme, and Thermage can be used for non-surgical facial skin tightening, but they are not a non-surgical facelift. This technology is improving every day. many of these treatments not only tighten facial skin but have wrinkle removal effects as well.

As you can see there are many ways to promote your health and prevent or reverse aging changes to your face and most are non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques that do not require plastic surgery. The key of course, as it is with all other aspects of your health is to start early, protect yourself and live a healthy lifestyle.
