Dear Dr. Seckel, I recently had 3 Fraxel treatments for wrinkle removal and I am unhappy with the results. It has been 3 months and I still don’t see much improvement in my wrinkles in fact I have seen no wrinkle removal. The treatments were painful and I turned a copper color after each treatment and my skin peeled. I have fair skin with wrinkles and fine lines around my moth and eyes and smile lines in my cheek. I though Fraxel was the best. What do you recommend for wrinkle removal, Katie, Boston, MA.

Dear Katie,

Fraxel treatments have been very successful for treating pigment and acne scars. Results for wrinkle removal have been less dramatic. Multiple, deep, higher energy Fraxel treatments can improve wrinkles but most agree a different type of laser skin rejuvenation therapy is better for wrinkle removal.

I use the ActiveFX laser skin peel for wrinkle removal and have been happy with the results. The ActiveFX is an ablative laser which means it ablates or removes dead skin and wrinkles during treatment as opposed to the Fraxel which is marketed as a non ablative laser treatment.

Please read the related blog on wrinkle removal for a more complete discussion of wrinkle removal.
