Dr Seckel, How do Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, Collagen, Hylaform, Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast remove fine lines and wrinkles from the face? Thank you, Arlene, New York, NY.

Dear Arlene,

All of the agents you asked about are called soft tissue fillers and are non-surgical facial rejuvenation agents. Typically soft tissue fillers are used to camouflage deep facial lines like the nasal labial fold and marionette lines and scars and are not typically used for fine lines and wrinkles. soft tissue fillers can achieve beautiful results if injected properly.

Most fine lines and wrinkles on the face are too superficial for a soft tissue filler to work. Fine lines and wrinkles are surface irregularities in the skin and must be removed by deep exfoliation sometimes with a laser skin peel. In addition fine lines and wrinkles are caused by loss of collagen in the skin and collagen must also be restored in the deeper layers of the skin for effective wrinkle removal. See my other posts regarding wrinkles. There are many non-surgical facial removal techniques available for wrinkle removal.

There are other types of wrinkles caused by the pull of the facial muscles. These are called dynamic wrinkles and are the crow’s feet, worry lines, and frown lines. The dynamic wrinkles and fine lines can be effectively treated with Botox®, another important non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique.

The fillers, Restylane, Radiesse, Sculptra, Collagen, Hylaform, Cosmoderm, and Cosmoplast are used on the deep facial lines around the mouth and nose, the deep nasal-labial fold lines and the marionette lines. These soft tissue fillers do not remove the lines; the soft tissue fillers are injected into the skin beneath the line and plump the line to make it less noticeable.

Soft tissue fillers are a very important non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique, and are most commonly used in the nasal labial fold and marionette lines.
