Dear Dr. Seckel, I had CO2 laser resurfacing in 1999 and as a result, I have much larger pores and some loss of pigmentation. I have had 4 VBeam laser treatments in 2005, which did help to even the skin color (a little) but not much else. What would you recommend to decrease the pore size and smooth the texture of my sensitive skin? Thank you, Taylor, Powder Springs, GA
Dear Taylor,
Loss of pigment-called hypopigmentation and enlarged pores are sometimes a sequelae of deep laser resurfacing. I am happy to hear the V beam laser has evened your color.
At the present time I recommend LaserGenesis® for reducing the size of enlarged pores. LaserGenesis® can also even skin texture and remove red spots, flush and Rosacea which are common on sensitive skin. IPL or phoyo fcial is also very good for red spots, Rosacea, and can reduce pore size and when combined with photodynamic therapy can control acne.
Be sure to wear your sun block and protect your face from the sun. The skin is extra sensitive to sun following laser resurfacing, as the skin is thinner and has less pigment for sun protection.
I hope this helps. Be sure to find a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in laser techniques. Any laser therapy is more complex when treating someone who has had prior laser resurfacing. The Laser Genesis® is a no contact non-ablative therapy which does not usually require any down time and is generally considered a gentle laser treatment. Usually 4-6 treatments are required.
