Dear Dr. Seckel, I am wondering if Sciton laser resurfacing can be done again, and if so how much time in between treatments? Thank you, Mary, Peterborough, Canada
Dear Mary,
The laser skin rejuvenation or laser skin peel called Sciton® Laser Resurfacing (a procedure which goes much deeper than the Sciton® MicroLaserPeel®) can sometimes be repeated but only if the skin has enough skin appendages (oil glands, sweat glands, and hair follicles) left after the first laser skin resurfacing to enable the skin to heal a second time. Results can be excellent.
This depends on how deep the first laser skin rejuvenation laser resurfacing was done. If the first resurfacing or laser skin peel was very deep and the skin looks thin, shiny, and dry then a second laser resurfacing should not be done because healing can be delayed and scarring can result.
However if the skin looks fairly normal and unchanged after the first laser skin peel or laser resurfacing then a second one can be done but only after at least a years delay. This decision must be made by a physician experienced in laser resurfacing after an exam of your face.
Of course, the laser skin rejuvenation technique called Sciton® Microlaserpeel®, is different from laser resurfacing. The MicroLaserPeel® is a much more superficial laser skin peel than laser resurfacing, and it is routinely done 2 or 3 times with a 3 month wait period in between.
However, a Sciton® laser resurfacing goes 4-5 times as deep into the skin as does a Sciton MicroLaserPeel®. Following a Sciton® laser resurfacing, which goes much deeper, I recommend at least a year before considering the procedure again.
Both procedures are often done to remove wrinkles, pigment, brown spots, fine lines, sun damage and acne scars, to do deep skin exfoliation , and to firm or tighten the skin and perform non-surgical facial rejuvenation. These procedures also stimulate the production of new collagen in the dermis of the skin.
