Dear Dr. Seckel, Would you recommend silicone as a safe and effective filler for the naso-labial area? What about Perlane? Is it effective? Thank you. Diana, McLean, VA.
Dear Diana,
I do not feel silicone injection into the skin and nasal labial fold is safe, it is not lawful to use it unlesss you have a special license from the FDA.
The problem is if there are impurities or improper injection technique using silicone injection into the skin you can develope granulomas -small permanent bumps or even draining wounds after silicone injection into the skin.
Perlane is a safe, FDA approved soft tissue filler for skin injection into the nasal labial fold. It is Hyaluronic Acid-other brands are Restylane and Hylaform. They are safe and effective soft tissue fillers but they have to be repeated at 6 month to 9 month intervals.
