Dear Dr. Seckel, Recently I saw a web cast describing a non-surgical blepharoplasty using Aluma FACES on the eyes (http://www.nbc4.com/health/9842667/detail.html). The video even showed the dr. using the wand directly on closed lids of a patient (over the eyeballs). The claim made is that this new technology is safe for use in this is manner while other lasers are not. Is this true? Many Thanks, Terry Ann, Kansas
Dear Terry Ann,
I do not think it is safe to use a radiofrequency device like the Aluma or Thermage directly over the eyeball for eyelid rejuvenation. Especially without a protective shield over the eyeball. I have been in communication with the director of the Aluma program at Lumenis the company that makes Aluma and will
await their answer and let you know.
The aluma is used for periocular and eyelid skin tightening. The specific technique involves displacing the eyelid downward on the cheek so that the Aluma with faces is not directed over the eyeball.
The Aluma can be helpful or eyelid rejuvenation and eyelid skin tightening when used properly but I would disagree with those who call this tecnique a non-surgical blepharoplasty.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
