I recently had a Radiesse injection under my right eyebrow at a Medical Spa. I didn’t have one under the left one. The RN that injected under the brow said that it would lift the brow and even it out with the other one. Now I have one swollen eyebrow and one naturally flat one. I have been massaging it and considering a correction. However, after reading some of your replies to people who are considering correcting Radiesse, I am hesitant to do so. I don’t know why I allowed her to do this to me, but it seemed logical at the time. I have never gone to a Medical Spa and should have left when I found out a doctor would not be performing the procedure. I am now considering having a small amount of filler added to the other eye, however using something more temporary than Radiesse. Would you recommend a little filler on the other eye in order to even out my appearance if it’s done by a physician? Sincerely, Debra, Eagle Pass, Texas

Dear Debra,
I am sorry to hear of your problem following a filler injection in a Medical Spa. I have received many similar emails from other people with similar problems following soft tissue filler injections in Medical Spa’s by unlicensed or inexperienced licensed people. Check my archives under “unhappy results” to read of some serious complications.

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am considering liposuction and have read about the new smartlipo and lipodissolve. Are these new procedures safe and effective? Why is liposuction better with a laser? Thank you, Margaret, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Margaret,

Smartlipo and lipodissolve are new techniques for dissolving and removing fat. The technique was pioneered by Dr Goldman in Brazil and has become very popular in the US during the past year.

What is new about smartlipo and lipodissolve is that a tiny cannula with a small laser (about the size of a pencil tip) […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 42 and have fair (Boston Irish) skin with some sun damage and fine wrinkles. I have used Retin A for years. I had a series of Fraxel treatments and the Fraxel did help remove pigment and improve my skin but I still have wrinkles. I have read that you use a laser called the 2940 for laser resurfacing. How is that laser different from the Fraxel. Thank you, Beth, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Beth,
Both the Fraxel and the Lux2940 are fractional laser resurfacing machines. The big difference is that the Fraxel is a non ablative laser and the Lux2940 is a fractional ablative laser. To ablate means to surgically remove, thus the Lux2940 removes damaged skin. The Fraxel is a non ablative laser, thus it does not […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have broken blood vessels around my nose and cheeks. I also have deep mouth lines that you call nasal labial fold and also jowls along my jaw. You mention the IPL is good fro broken blood vessels but will it help tighten my cheeks and jaw line. Thank you, Betty, Wellesley, Ma.

Dear Betty,

The IPL also called Photo-facial is an excellent method for removing small blood vessels on the face. However the IPL or Photo-facial cannot tighten skin and correct the nasal labial fold and jowls. The most definitive procedure to tighten facial skin and correct the nasal labial fold and jowls is the face lift […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I did so much research and made a bad decision I thought I was informed but what I needed to do was just leave my face alone and use topicals. I lost a lot of weight and had Radiesse injected in my nasal folds the doctor over corrected a bit and 6 months later I had it done again to correct the over fill. Well my right cheek is where the over fill was and I don’t know what the hell happened but he injected under the skin orally and somehow it seems as though the Radiesse migrated or moved up under my eye and caused a ridge a bump of sorts and it is ugly I hate it and I tried to massage it but because its under the eye it’s gets sore swells and then just looks the same I’m trying to have much patience. But to me it looks deformed in certain light. I’m blessed I’m alive things could be worse. But question is I heard if you have MINIMAL treatment with cortisone to the lump MININMAL with massage it can reduce the lump….it’s fairly small but cause an unbalance. What do you suggest? I’m tormented? I don’t’ want to do anything to cause a hole under my eye I hear sometimes when you inject steroids cortisone it can cause shallow spots maybe used in large doses over periods of time I’m interested in using this as a minimal one time treatment. These were two different doctors and I’m considering only a dermatologist please advise, thank you, Sherri, Oakland, CA

Dear Sherri,

Thank you for your email. Complaints about filler injections, Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm are the most common type of email I receive. One problem I believe is that so many untrained people, including non-physicians are injecting them.

Technique and experience are very important for a good result following the injection of a soft […]
