Dear Dr. Seckel, What is the difference between a medical aesthetician and regular aesthetician? Are the aesthetician services available in your office different from those available in a medical spa or a salon? I am considering aesthetician school but also thinking about nursing school. I like aesthetics but want to be able to do the things that I read about in your book. Thank you, Rita, Boston

Dear Rita,

A major difference is that a medical aesthetician works with and under the supervision of a doctor in the doctor’s office. There are specific medical aesthetician training programs which require a 1200 hour course. One of the best is at Catherine Hinds Institute which is in the Boston Area http://catherinehinds.com/medical.php3. Another career path […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, How do you remove eye bags? Is the laser the best way? Thanks, Mary-Margaret, Boston, MA

The eyes are the “window to the soul” and our most frequently viewed facial feature and unfortunately the first feature to show the signs of facial aging. Usually by the 30’s we begin to see crow’s feet, wrinkles, eye bags, dark circles under the eyes, and the start of eyelid hoods or hooding of […]

Dear Dr Seckel, I am 38 years old and have good skin and most people say I look younger than I am. I am beginning to notice some loose skin under my chin and some lines running from my nose down to the corner of my mouth. I have read a lot about the face lift on the internet but it seems very extreme. Can you explain the difference between a face lift and a mini face lift? Thanks, Cheri, Boston, MA

Boston is the medical “Mecca” and as in all areas of medicine there are many expert doctors in the Boston area who do face lift surgery.

If you are considering a face lift or any facial rejuvenation procedure it is important to understand what a facelift can and cannot achieve and the many variations of […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have a couple tiny red dots that appear to be broken blood vessels near my nose, one on my cheek, a few on my chest, one on my hand, and another on my arm. I do get a lot of sun exposure but I have noticed that I am getting more over the years. They don’t hurt or bother me in anyway other than being unsightly but is there a way to remove them or treat them? Also, what causes them to appear in the first place? Juliana, Brooklyn, NY

Dear Juliana,

Small red spots or blood vessels on the face are called Telangiectasia. They may appear on the face of people with very fair skin at an early age.
However most commonly they appear as “broken blood vessels” after many years of sun exposure. The UV rays of the sun injure the skin and cause […]

Dear Dr Seckel, I am 40 years old and take great care of my skin. I have begun to notice what you call nasal labial fold and marionette lines and my lip is not as full as it once was. In your book you recommend fillers like Juvaderm, Radiesse and Restylane. How do you decide which one to use? Thank you, Betsy, Boston, MA.

Dear Betsy from Boston,

Thank you for your email. The new soft tissue fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse are excellent solutions for early facial aging changes such as the marionette lines, Nasal labial fold lines and thin lips. See photo below for lip rejuvenation with a filler:

Juvederm and Restylane are fillers […]
