Dear Dr. Seckel,I have a horizontal indentation or line that has formed on one side of my nose along with two smaller lines. It is not a scar and has been there for nearly ten years. I have tried microdermabrasion and non ablative laser treatments and while the rest of my face has benefitted nothing seems to reduce the appearance of the line. I have even seen a doctor and inquired about the use of a filler on my nose, but they said the filling of horizontal lines is usually not succesful.I have read in your blog about the skin tightening with the Aluma Skin Renewal System with FACES and wonder if this might help. Thank you, Marie, Boston, MA.

Dear Marie,
I cannot be certain without examining you but I believe you are describing a bunny line caused by the contraction of the procerus and nasalis muscles. Bunny lines are similar to crow’s feet, worry lines and frown lines in that they are caused by contractioon of the muscles of facial expression and require botox [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, What is the difference between a MicroLaserPeel® and a Fraxel®. I have wrinkles, brown spots and pigment and other early facial aging changes. I want the best facial rejuvenation procedure and I want a non-surgical facial rejuvenation program that works. I don’t want a face-lift. Thanks, Betty, Boston, MA.

Dear Betty,
Both the MicroLaserPeel®, done with the Sciton® Profile Erbium laser, and the Fraxel®, done with the Fraxel® laser by Reliant Technologies® are non-surgical facial rejuvenation laser skin treatments used to remove wrinkles, pigment and other facial aging changes on the surface of the facial skin. With repeated applications wrinkle removal and pigment removal are [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, About 6 years ago I had CO2 laser resurfacing. Acne scars were softened and I loved the results. I use Retin-A daily because even at 40, my skin is as oily as it ever was. Now I am viewing pimples and wrinkles. Is CO2 laser resurfacing an option after 6 years? I liked your book and I join all the people cheering that something so clear with the advantages/disadvantages has been published. Thank you so much. Deb, Hampstead, NH.

Dear Deb,
Thank you for the kind words about Save Your Face.
You certainly can have laser resurfacing or laser skin rejuvenation a second time if the skin is healthy and has plenty of oil glands and hair follicles to provide cells to heal the skin surface after the laser peel or laser resurfacing.
However there are many [...]

Dr Seckel: Are there any known side effects such as skin discoloration when restylane is used in Black skin? Robin, Atlanta, GA.

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

Dear Robin,
There are no side effects I am aware of re loss of pigmentation in Black skin following soft tissue filler injections-and I would not expect any-as I have injected black skin with Restylane with no problems. The filler needs to be injected in mid to deep dermis. If it is injected too superficially then [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, A year ago February, I had collagen fillers in my nasal-labial fold lines. I believe that the procedure was not done deep enough in the dermis, leaving to this day bumps and irregular shaped lumping. Looking like long worms! They appear sporadically and even with massaging take days to disappear. Can you explain why this might have taken place and what can be done about it? My friend, Cindy whom I am visiting in Fla, recommended I contact you. Judy, Hyannis, MA

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

Dear Judy,
I suspect your diagnosis is correct. When Collagen or any soft tissue filler is placed too superficial in the upper dermis of the nasal labial fold line it can create unsightly bumps and lumps.
I would recommend the massages you are doing. Gently massage directly on the bumps in the nasal labial fold line. I [...]

Hello Doctor Seckel. I am 27 years old. I have had dark circles under my eyes for almost all of my life. I am tired of using concealer to attempt to cover them and have no success. I do not necessarily have bags under my eyes as in puffiness or extra skin. The skin under my eyes just seems to be very thin. I do have a hypothyroidism problem that I am treating with medication and am also taking birth control pills. What would you recommend for treatment? I have heard about fat injections, blepharoplasty, and laser treatment. I know I will need to consult a doctor in person; I’m just trying to decide what would be best? Please help….Nadine, South Korea

I do not do filler and fat injections around the eyes-I think it is dangerous

Hi Dr. Seckel. I have had hereditary hollowness under my eyes that really bother me. I was wondering if there was any non-surgical method to eliminate my dark circles. I have heard that there could be some sort of injection that required little recovery time, but I could be wrong. What are the names of these surgeries that could help eliminate these circles and about how much do they cost? Thanks so much, Katherine, Arlington Heights, IL

Dear Katherine,
There is no good non-surgical facial rejuvenation or eyelid rejuvenation method method to correct dark circles under the eyes other than cover up with Cover mark® or Dermablend®-2 excellent products.
I do not do filler injections around the eyes for eyelid rejuvenation to correct the tired look or dark circles under the eyes. Some Doctors [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I was wondering how effective Titan is for tightening the face/neck and the thigh area. I know that it requires multiple treatments, but how long do the treatments last? Thank you. Dee, McLean, VA

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Dear Dee,
Titan is one of 5 non-surgical facial rejuvenation skin tightening technologies available. Thermage® and Aluma with FACES® use radiofrequency energy and Titan® and the Palomar Starlux® LUXIR Fractional Handpiece use Infrared energy and Refirme uses a combination of energies.
I have tried them all on my face-I like the Aluma with FACES and the Luxir [...]

Hello Dr. Seckel, I am 27 years old and have noticed worsening of dark circles under my eyes just in the last two months. Extra sleep does not help and I’m considering IPL for old skin blemishes – can this help the circles as well? if not, is there anything else i can do? Vicky, Canada

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Dear Vicki,
IPL or photo facial will not help dark circles under the eyes. Usually an eyelid surgery procedure called transconjunctival laser blepharoplasty with arcus marginalis release and fat repositioning is required to correct dark circles under the eyes. I have written a lot about this procedure. Check the archives on the right hand side of [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Hi, I am 36 years old of Spanish decent. I have olive skin. I have fine lines, wrinkles under my eyes, facial aging some uneven skin tone and slight enlarged pores. There are so many lasers and techniques out there and I am confused as to what minimally invasive or non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedure I can use to correct my problems. In addition to trying to correct those problems is there anything else you recommend (IPL, photo facial) to then help in keeping fine lines at a minimum and keeping my skin looking pretty. Thanks so much doc!! Xica, NY, NY.

puffy eyelids and dark circles then an eyelid operation called a laser blepharoplasty will be necessary.
