Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a 37-year-old woman who had restylane injected under her eyes to reduce puffiness. It has been 3 weeks (had the treatment done 1/3/06) and now my eyes have dark circles and lumpiness under them. I am an African American woman. Will this last forever or will my eyes go back to its normal state? I never had dark circles until the restylane injection. Please help! My eyes look horrible. Is there any over the counter product you recommend to get rid of the dark circles under my eye? Thank you, Chantay, Ft. Worth, TX.

Dear Chantay,
I am sorry to hear that the Restylane® injection around the eyes has caused the dark circles and lumpiness under your eyes. I do not recommend Restylane® injection or other soft tissue filler injection around the eyes for eyelid rejuvenation because of these and other potential problems. Restylane filler injection is a good non-surgical […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, My G.P.’s office is now offering Laser Genesis. The procedures are performed by technicians that are trained by the manufacturer of the laser machine, which is Cutera.I’ll turn 50 this June, and I have fine lines, mild redness, and enlarged pores, and I’m thinking of having laser genesis vein therapy and facial rejuvenation. This would be my first facial cosmetic procedure and I have two questions - Do you recommend starting with laser rejuvenation, and is it normal for ‘technicians’ to do these procedures? Sid, Atlanta, Georgia.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Sid,
Board certified plastic surgeons spend 7 years after medical school and dermatologists spend 3-4 after medical school learning how to do facial rejuvenation and non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques. I am surprised that your G.P. with no board certification would feel comfortable offering you advice on laser skin rejuvenation, facial rejuvenation and laser non-surgical facial […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Marionette lines - know what they are? Need to know if they are better treated with Botox or another injectable, which begins with “R”, have forgotten name. Thank you. Marcia, Maynard, MA

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Dear Marcia,
Thank you for your question about Marionette Lines. They are those deep lines that form below the corners of your mouth and run down onto the chin. Many people complain that the Marionette Lines give the face an angry look. They are called Marionette Lines because they resemble the mouth of a puppet or […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have been researching into the use of laser surgery for facial blemishes, wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. In trying to locate a suitable surgeon it is difficult to ascertain which treatments are referred to by their real names and which are simply generic marketing terms. There appears to be new surgery which is non intrusive and is referred to as IPL. You refer to the laser genesis in other posts which appears to be this kind of treatment and I am wondering what differentiates this from FotoFacial, Photo rejuvenation etc. Are they essentially the same procedure? Thank you, Lee, San Diego, CA.

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Dear Lee,
I agree with you that the topic of non-surgical laser and photo facial skin rejuvenation and wrinkle removal is a very confusing topic, made worse by the wide variety of branding of facial rejuvenation techniques. I have attempted in my book Save Your Face to organize and clarify this broad topic and the book […]

Hi Dr. Seckel, I was interested in Laser Genesis for improving the texture of my skin and pore size reduction. I recently heard about another procedure called ‘laser toning’ that seemed similar. Is one better than the other? Thank you! Lenora, Atlanta, GA

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Dear Lenora,
The term laser toning is new to me. I am guessing that it may refer to improving skin texture with the laser.
Toning might imply tightening. Skin tightening is not done with the laser but with radiofrequency or infrared machines such as Titan®, Thermage®, LuxIR and Aluma® with FACES®.
Improving skin texture and pore size […]

Dear Dr Seckel, I recently had the Micro-laser peel at your clinic. I have to tell you the results have been amazing! I had 4 days down time and was back out and about. I love your staff and feel safe in knowing that you and your staff are so caring and knowledgeable. I have to say that since I have been your patient I have have never had so many complments on my skin. That is without surgery and following your regimen. I Thank you again. I am trying to get back up asap so Dawn can take pictures. Sincerely, Melissa C.

Dear Melissa,
Thank you so much for your kind words and for visiting me at my Boston Plastic Surgery Practice. You are a joy as a patient!
Laser skin rejuvenation and laser peel and the microlaserpeel in particular are wonderful procedures for the right patient, which you so obviously are.

Dear Dr. Seckel, Hollow Eye Socket. What can I do to remedy my eye problem? I want more mass above my eye. All the baby fat is gone and all I have left is a floating eye inside a round socket. Ania, New York, NY.

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Dear Ania,
I recommend you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in eyelid surgery. The eyelid rejuvenation procedure called blepharoplasty unless it includes a special procedure called a supratarsal fixation would make your problem worse. Fat grafting can improve hollow eyes caused by loss of fat from the lower eyelid but fat […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a smoker and over the past year I have watched my facial pores become huge. How do I reduce the size of my facial pores? Brenda, Summerville, SC.

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Dear Brenda,
Please check the many blogs I have written about enlarged pores under the archives section on the right hand side of the screen.
Microdermabrasion®, and drying creams such as Retin A® or Brevoxyl washes are a good place to start. Lasers such as Lasergenesis® and Smoothbeam® can help but I would not move to lasers […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Does laser genesis really help enlarged pores? Sarah,Regina, Sask., Canada.

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Dear Sarah,
Lasergenesis® has been reported to reduce skin pore size in several clinical papers. The important point is that reduction in skin pore size has required 4-5 treatments and 4-5 months to see the result.
The most important thing for you to do is to consult a reputable board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced with […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I AM 54 YRS OLD AND THE PAST FEW YEARS THE SKIN ON MY NECK HAS BECOME QUITE LOOSE, IS THERE A NON SURGICAL PROCEDURE FOR THIS PROBLEM, OR IS A FACE LIFT NECESSARY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ELLEN, REVERE MA.

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

Dear Ellen,
Thank you for your question.
There are several new non-surgical facial rejuvenation skin tightening technologies available that can be used to tighten neck skin. Thermage®, Titan®, LuxIR, Refirme, and the newest one Aluma® with FACES.
Generally these non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques get about a 30% skin tightening. They are not a non-surgial face lift. They […]
