Dear Dr. Seckel, I am an African American Woman with a dark complexion. I would like to lighten my skin color to a lighter shade of brown. I’ve noticed a lot of darker skinned African American celebrities that seem to lighten their skin and I wanted to know what procedure they used to do that. I’ve tried many topical bleaching creams but they seem to do minimal. Also, do you know of any surgeons that would perform this procedure? I’m not trying to make my skin white, but I would like to be a lighter shade of brown. Please help me. Robin Sterling Heights, MI.

Dear Robin,
To my knowledge there are no safe procedures to significantly and evenly lighten dark skin to a lighter shade. Very deep laser treatment can remove pigmentation but the result can be uneven color (like vitiligo), possibly deep scarring and a very noticeable demarcation line on the neck where the dark skin would begin again.
The […]

Hi Dr. Seckel, My name is Suzan; my age is 34 years old. I have blackheads on my noise and I have blackheads and scares on my chin as a result from deep acne. I also have moderate acne scaring in my face. I am using Tretinoin Cream (0.05%) for about one year, but I did not get that much improvement. Therefore, I would like to treat the scars that I have and improve the overall complexion and appearance of my skin with the most safety ways. I was told to use Laser Genesis to my chin area and use a Fraxel laser to my face and then use one to two times Blue Peel. Do you think this is a good way to achieve a very good result or it is enough to use Genesis to my chin and Blue Peel to my face, since I am afraid from using laser to my face? Thank you very much for your cooperation. Susan, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Fraxel® is a laser skin rejuvenation procedure, and an ablative laser skin peel, which means it does skin exfoliation or skin removal during treatment.
If you are concerned, and want the most gentle treatment for acne scars and enlarged pores I believe the LaserGenesis® is the most gentle, non-ablative laser treatment. Clearlight® by Lumenis® and […]

dear dr seckel i am writing to you to gain your opinion about areas of my appearance i am unhappy with. first, i have some darkness/hollowing below my eyes. also, some fine wrinkling above. second, i had a chin implant operation a few years ago. although i like the augmentation provided, there is some scarring/discoloration around my chin/jaw area. Please find attached photos to try and illustrate. Are there procedures available to provide an improvement? I look forward to hearing from you. kind regards, Toni

Dear Toni,
Because I have not examined you personally I cannot give specific recommendations. I am happy to express my opinions about the general issues you raise.
I have written many blogs about eyelid rejuvenation, blepharoplasty, eyelid wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes and eyelid bags and you may want to check the archives of my previous […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I’ve had Oily, large pores most of my life, You’ve referred to LaserGenesis as a good solution, are you the only one that does this treatment and what is the cost of this? Tami, Ypsilanti, MI.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Tami,
There are many treatments for oily skin and large pores that I recommend before LaserGenesis. I start patients on microdermabrasion®, brevoxyl washes and prescription creams such as Retin A® first. These are good treatments and less expensive than laser treatments and can reduce the size of enlarged pores.
You need to find a good board […]

Hi Dr. Seckel, As a result of a microdermabrasion treatment that went bad about 3 1/2 months ago, I am left with 4 slightly indented spots on my cheek that are pinkish in color. My belief is that the machine malfunctioned. I had scabs on my face for over 2 weeks. Is there anything I can do? At 3 1/2 months are these scars still considered ‘new’ when referring to treatments that are effective for new scars? Thank you! Lenora, Powder Springs.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Lenora,
The scars on your cheeks are still new and will improve. The best treatment now is massage and time. The scars will not be fully mature until about 2 years.
If after a few months the scars are still depressed a treatment to stimulate new collagen production in the skin, such as lasergenesis® might help, […]

Hi Dr Seckel, I have deep acne scars as well as acne on my neck.I have been doing micro dermabrasion but what can I do about the scars. I don’t need total perfection just need to feel good about my face again? Kyla Ball, Gloucester, Ontario.

Dear Kyla,
You are not alone. Millions of people have acne and acne scars and just want to have normal skin.
There is no one cure that can create perfect skin.
However there is a great deal we can do today to help especially with the new non-surgical facial rejuvenation and laser skin rejuvenation techniques.
On the face I […]

Dear Doctor Seckel, I have ONE very large pore that looks like a black hole beside my left nostril and I’m very self-conscious of it, what can be done? Erika, Ottawa, Ontario

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Erika
The most effective treatment to remove one enlarged pore is to remove it with a round surgical cutting device called a skin punch. After the pore is removed, the hole is stitched. The problem with this technique is that it leaves a small scar where the pore once was.
Personally I would not trade an […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, What is the remedy for dark circles/brown splotches underneath the eyes/above cheekbones? Sherri, Winston-Salem, NC.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Sherri,
The eyelid rejuvenation treatment for dark circles under the eyes is different from the removal of pigment or brown splotches under the eyes. The former is a surgical procedure, the laser transconjunctival blepharoplasty with arcus marginalis release, the later is a combination of skin exfoliation creams and laser skin rejuvenation for pigment removal from […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Hello, I’m a 24 year old college student and I’m interested in Fraxel treatments. I was told I’d be the perfect candidate because I want to get rid of some mild acne scarring, red spots. They are mostly along my cheeks and sides of my face. I’m currently on Sinemet and occasionally use spot treatments of Differin. Should I be getting Fraxel treatments? What are the risks associated with Asian skin. Technically speaking, I’m 1/2 European heritage and 1/2 Asian heritage. I used to tan very easily when I was young, but as I’ve gotten older its harder to for my skin to tan. However, for the past year or two I’ve not tanned and grown out of the tanning phase, I don’t want to look like leather! So is Fraxel for me? Asian College Student, Melbourne, FL.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Student,
Fraxel is a good treatment for acne scarring but I would not recommend Fraxel® or any other ablative(ablate means to surgically remove) laser treatment or laser skin peel for acne scarring if red spots, rosacea, or broken blood vessels are a major pr0blem, especially on Asian skin. The problem is that Fraxel and other […]

Thank you Dr. Seckel for your quick response! I forgot to mention that under eyes my where he injected the Restylane to correct the puffy eyes and dark circles is now elongated giving me the sagging under the eye look. Will that also disappear? I now look 20 years older. Prior to having this procedure, I visited 6 different plastic surgeons who told me that I didn’t need eyelid surgery to reduce the puffiness because this is the way my eyes are made. Thank you, Chantay, Ft Worth, TX.

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Dear Chantay,
Thank you. I hope that others will read of your experience on this website and avoid the problem you have experienced with the non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique of filler injection into the eyelid to treat bags and dark circles under the eyes. I always recommend that my readers seek consultation with a board certified […]
