Dear Dr Seckel, I had a blepharoplasty done several years ago. I am happy because the eyelid bags are gone, but now my eyes have a sad look. Can anything be done to fix this. Thanks, Mary Beth, Dallas TX.

Dear Mary Beth,
Yes, the sad eyed look or hound dog eyes that happens to some people after blepharoplasty can be corrected. Of course the best cure is prevention. Modern blepharoplasty and eyelid rejuvenation techniques have been modified to prevent the sad eyed look so it does not happen in the first place.
To correct the sad […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 56 years old and have terrible dark circles under my eyes. I also have puffiness and eyelid bags. My skin is pretty good; I don’t have a lot of wrinkles. A friend told me that I could have implants placed to correct the dark circles. Is this true? I have heard of breast implants, but are there really implants for dark circles? Do they work? Thank you, Denise, San Francisco, CA.

Dear Denise,
Believe it or not there are tear trough implants made to correct dark circles under the eyes and for eyelid rejuvenation which are also called the tear trough deformity. They are very different from breast implants so don’t confuse the two. Breast implants are soft and contain a liquid such as saline or silicone. […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I heard about a new non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment called FACES which tightens skin. I think it is also called aluma. Have you heard of this? What do you think of it? Thanks, Sandy, Boston, Ma.

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Dear Sandy,
I have indeed heard of FACES and you are correct it is part of a new multiplatform laser system called Aluma® skin renewal system with FACES®.
What is really new is the skin tightening feature that is an exciting new non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique. As you may know from reading this website skin tightening is […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I see that you are a big proponent of Laser Genesis for the reduction enlarged pores. However, I am an African American male with very dark skin, will this treatment work for me, if not do you suggest any form of pore reduction for black skin? Thank you, Dee, New York, NY

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Dear Dee,
Thank you for a very important question. I do feel LaserGenesis® is safe for black skin and is a good method to shrink enlarged pores.
Unlike other lasers there is no contact with the skin, thus the chance of injury to the skin, which could result in loss of pigment or hypo pigmentation and […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I recently had Fraxel on my face, neck and chest and found it rather painful even though I have a very high pain tolerance. I was told my face would have a sunburned appearance and minimal swelling for 1-3 days. I was swollen for 6 days and I still have redness on my right temple. I went to the doctors today and he said that I have acne or small case of rosacea. I have never had a pimple in my life and I am very worried that my skin will never be the same. I have looked at a zillion websites and cannot find any reaction similar to mine. Most show no side effects. I am on medication and he wants to do a photo facial on me this Wednesday. Is this ok? Have you heard of anything like this? Help… I am only 40 years old, and looked like a young 32 yr old - I so wish that I never done this. Joey, Austin, Texas.

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Dear Joey,
Please don’t worry; I am sure your skin will improve in time.
It is common to have an acne type outbreak after any ablative laser skin rejuvenation procedure which causes skin exfoliation on the face. The Fraxel® does ablate (remove) tissue. Because the Fraxel® does micro ablation (unlike laser resurfacing which removes all of the […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am going to have a blepharoplasty done to remove the bags under my eyes. Will the blepharoplasty also remove the dark circles under my eyes? I have tried every cream and the dark circles are still there. Thank you. Eve, St Paul, MN.

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Dear Eve,
Thank you for a great question. While eyelid rejuvenation surgery called Blepharoplasty or eye tuck can remove eye bags, blepharoplasty alone will not remove dark circles under the eyes.
The dark circles, called the naso-jugal folds in medical terms, are caused by an attachment between the muscle and skin under the dark circle to […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I had CO2 laser resurfacing in 1999 and as a result, I have much larger pores and some loss of pigmentation. I have had 4 VBeam laser treatments in 2005, which did help to even the skin color (a little) but not much else. What would you recommend to decrease the pore size and smooth the texture of my sensitive skin? Thank you, Taylor, Powder Springs, GA

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Dear Taylor,
Loss of pigment-called hypopigmentation and enlarged pores are sometimes a sequelae of deep laser resurfacing. I am happy to hear the V beam laser has evened your color.
At the present time I recommend LaserGenesis® for reducing the size of enlarged pores. LaserGenesis® can also even skin texture and remove red spots, flush and Rosacea […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a 30yr Indian woman with a dark complexion. I would like to lighten my skin color to a very light shade. What would you recommend for skin bleaching, skin whitening or skin lightening. What is the most effective and safest way to begin this process. Also, are there procedures that would work? Thank you, Nancy, New York.

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Dear Nancy,
In my opinion there are no safe procedures to lighten dark skin to white skin. Very deep laser treatment can remove pigmentation but the result would be uneven color, possibly deep scarring and a very noticeable demarcation line on the neck where the dark skin would begin again.
The best treatment to lighten skin color […]

Dear Dr. Seckel: I am nearing 40. A year and a half ago at the ripe old age of 38 I had a mini face-lift to tighten my skin that was beginning to sag prematurely. I also had a fat transfer to soften my nasal-labial folds. Well, unfortunately the results don’t seem to be lasting. My skin is once again beginning to sag and the lines are back. To make matters worse I have rosacea and a tendency for hyper pigmentation. This past August and again 6 weeks later I had the Sciton Erbium Contour peel (12microns and 20 microns respectively). Although I saw firmer skin immediately following, the results were only temporary and after the second peel my rosacea seemed worse. Help! In your opinion is the Sciton or Cutera’s Titan better for tightening? I thought I might try a combination of Laser Genesis for my rosacea and then may be one Titan treatment in between. I would appreciate your views. Thank you! Meg, Northport, NY.

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Dear Meg,
You obviously are well read and up to date on Facial Rejuvenation Techniques and laser skin rejuvenation. The conclusion you have reached yourself would be my recommendation: LaserGenesis®, followed by Titan®.
The Titan is specifically for skin tightening, using infrared energy to heat the deep collagen in the skin and cause tightening. The Sciton Contour […]

Dear Dr Seckel, I am 52 years old and have lines under my eyes, along with the area becoming hollow looking. I had laser resurfacing done on my entire face 2 years ago, and at first the under eye area looked good (there was swelling which plumped up the area), but after I was totally healed the areas under my eyes went back to looking hollow/thin and the fine lines came back. Would you recommend I do laser resurfacing again under my eyes, or would you recommend fat grafting, or something else? Thanks! Jenny, Salem, Oregon

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Dear Jenny,
Thank you for a very important question about eyelid rejuvenation. I would not recommend laser resurfacing to treat hollow eyes or dark circles under the eyes. Laser resurfacing or laser skin rejuvenation can tighten lower eyelid skin. Although fine lines and wrinkles initially are improved, they eventually return as you point out. The fine […]
