“Dr. Seckel, I have primary open angle glaucoma and have had it for 20 years. My present medication is travatan .004% and all the meds I’ve taken over the years have given me dark circles under the eyelids. Is there any treatment to lighten the skin around and under my eyes that will help to lighten this area. I’m a very active person and I have used cover up concealer but it really doesn’t make it. I am a male 69 years of age. Thanking you in advance,” - Norman

Dear Norman,
Unfortunately there is no cream that will remove the dark color on the eyelids.
The dark color is actually caused by the purple color of the eyelid muscle, and because the eyelid skin is so thin you can actually see the color of the muscle through the skin causing the dark color under the […]

“Dear Dr. Seckel, I have developed lines (or folds) that go from the corners of my mouth down to my jaw. I guess it’s just gravity at work, but I have to say I am VERY self-conscious. It’s only in recent years that I started noticing them, and they became more pronounced when I lost some weight. Is there a creme you can recommend to firm this area, or can it only be resolved by surgery? Help! I am getting tired of hiding behind my hands! Thank you,” - Cynthia, Andover, MA

Dear Cynthia,
You can stop hiding, help is available!
The lines you refer to are called Marionette Lines because they resemble the lines on either side of the mouth of a puppet - remember Mr. Bluster on the Howdy Doody puppet show? They are an extension of the Nasal-labial Fold Lines that run from the side […]

Dear Lauren,
Sun exposure definitely increases the risk for Melanoma, especially in people who have a family history of melanoma.
Sun block is crucial and sun avoidance is very important especially for your children.
The best sun blocks today also contain the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. Studies have shown that these vitamins triple the effectiveness of […]

“Dear Dr. Seckel, Is there really anything to do for large pores?” - Beth, Boston,Ma.

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

Dear Beth,
The size of the pores on the facial skin, especially on the nose, is related to the size of the oil glands and sweat glands underneath the skin. During the summer, with the hot weather these glands are more active thus the skin pores are enlarged more during hot weather.
The most effective therapy I […]

“Dear Dr.Seckel, I am considering having laser resurfacing done above my lip (wrinkles). Which procedure, in your opinion, is most effective? (C02 or Fraxil).” — Sandy, Lexington, MA

Monday, August 1st, 2005

Dear Sandy,
Ablative laser Resurfacing with the CO2 or Erbium laser is the “Gold Standard”  for plastic surgeons and dermatologists for skin rejuvenation, lip rejuvenation, removing lip wrinkles and lipstick lines and wrinkle removal for the entire face.
The Fraxil is a non-ablative laser and would need to be repeated several times to achieve a similar […]
