Dear Dr. Seckel, I was wondering how effective Titan is for tightening the face/neck and the thigh area. I know that it requires multiple treatments, but how long do the treatments last? Thank you. Dee, McLean, VA

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Dear Dee,
Titan is one of 5 non-surgical facial rejuvenation skin tightening technologies available. Thermage® and Aluma with FACES® use radiofrequency energy and Titan® and the Palomar Starlux® LUXIR Fractional Handpiece use Infrared energy and Refirme uses a combination of energies.
I have tried them all on my face-I like the Aluma with FACES and the Luxir […]

Hi Dr. Seckel, I was interested in Laser Genesis for improving the texture of my skin and pore size reduction. I recently heard about another procedure called ‘laser toning’ that seemed similar. Is one better than the other? Thank you! Lenora, Atlanta, GA

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Dear Lenora,
The term laser toning is new to me. I am guessing that it may refer to improving skin texture with the laser.
Toning might imply tightening. Skin tightening is not done with the laser but with radiofrequency or infrared machines such as Titan®, Thermage®, LuxIR and Aluma® with FACES®.
Improving skin texture and pore size […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am considering a skin tightening procedure. I have read your articles about Titan skin tightening. How painful is the procedure? How soon do you see a result? Is there any new skin tightening method on the horizon? Thank you, Phil, Boston, MA.

Dear Phil,
The non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedure called skin tightening with the Titan® machine does produce discomfort; the machine produces a stinging heat sensation. While the pain is certainly tolerable, I prefer to apply a topical anesthetic cream on my patients because the procedure can take an hour or more and after time and many pulses […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I heard about a new non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment called FACES which tightens skin. I think it is also called aluma. Have you heard of this? What do you think of it? Thanks, Sandy, Boston, Ma.

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Dear Sandy,
I have indeed heard of FACES and you are correct it is part of a new multiplatform laser system called Aluma® skin renewal system with FACES®.
What is really new is the skin tightening feature that is an exciting new non-surgical facial rejuvenation technique. As you may know from reading this website skin tightening is […]

Dear Dr. Seckel: I am nearing 40. A year and a half ago at the ripe old age of 38 I had a mini face-lift to tighten my skin that was beginning to sag prematurely. I also had a fat transfer to soften my nasal-labial folds. Well, unfortunately the results don’t seem to be lasting. My skin is once again beginning to sag and the lines are back. To make matters worse I have rosacea and a tendency for hyper pigmentation. This past August and again 6 weeks later I had the Sciton Erbium Contour peel (12microns and 20 microns respectively). Although I saw firmer skin immediately following, the results were only temporary and after the second peel my rosacea seemed worse. Help! In your opinion is the Sciton or Cutera’s Titan better for tightening? I thought I might try a combination of Laser Genesis for my rosacea and then may be one Titan treatment in between. I would appreciate your views. Thank you! Meg, Northport, NY.

Dear Meg,
You obviously are well read and up to date on Facial Rejuvenation Techniques and laser skin rejuvenation. The conclusion you have reached yourself would be my recommendation: LaserGenesis®, followed by Titan®.
The Titan is specifically for skin tightening, using infrared energy to heat the deep collagen in the skin and cause tightening. The Sciton Contour […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Is it true that you can have a non-surgical face lift? Thank you, Mary Jo, Richmond, Virginia.

Monday, November 7th, 2005

Dear Mary Jo,
The short answer is no, a face lift, also called a rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess facial skin and tighten the face to give the face a more youthful appearance. The non-surgical face lift so frequently talked about is not a face lift but a skin tightening procedure.
The term […]

“Dear Dr. Seckel, Thanks for writing your wonderful new book, and I really appreciate “What’s New” and “Ask Dr. Seckel” on your website. My question concerns the Thermage procedure. I’ve read that results vary greatly from patient to patient. Can you explain why and tell me who (age, skin type, etc.) can expect the best results? How often must the treatment be repeated to maintain improvement?” -Ann, North Carolina

Dear Ann,
Thank you for your excellent questions. I will answer the first question about Thermage® in this posting and answer the second question about “home microdermabrasion kits in a second posting.
Thermage® is a high tech facial rejuvenation macine which uses a radiofrequency wave to heat the deep layers of the skin. Theoretically when you heat […]
