Dear Dr. Seckel, I am an African American Woman with a dark complexion. I would like to lighten my skin color to a lighter shade of brown. I’ve noticed a lot of darker skinned African American celebrities that seem to lighten their skin and I wanted to know what procedure they used to do that. I’ve tried many topical bleaching creams but they seem to do minimal. Also, do you know of any surgeons that would perform this procedure? I’m not trying to make my skin white, but I would like to be a lighter shade of brown. Please help me. Robin Sterling Heights, MI.

Dear Robin,
To my knowledge there are no safe procedures to significantly and evenly lighten dark skin to a lighter shade. Very deep laser treatment can remove pigmentation but the result can be uneven color (like vitiligo), possibly deep scarring and a very noticeable demarcation line on the neck where the dark skin would begin again.

“Dear Dr Seckel, I was recently diagnosed with melanoma and since then have been searching for a good sunblock for myself and my infant son.” - Lauren, Billerica, MA

Dear Lauren,
Sun exposure definitely increases the risk for Melanoma, especially in people who have a family history of melanoma.
Sun block is crucial and sun avoidance is very important especially for your children.
The best sun blocks today also contain the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. Studies have shown that these vitamins triple the effectiveness of […]

“Dear Dr. Seckel, I heard about your fabulous new book “Save Your Face” and can’t wait to get a copy of it! I had a general question regarding skin creams. Since turning forty 2 years ago I have been using a glycolic acid cream (10%) on my face, thinking it was superior to tretinoin because I would get a little tingling feeling when applying it. I noticed you spoke about tretinoin as the best cream for facial wrinkles, but how do the alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic acid, compare? Should I switch to RetinA? Thanks for any info you can provide!? –Loriann, Billerica, MA

Dear Loriann,
Thank you for the email!
The alpha hydroxy acids, including glycolic acid are excellent skin rejuvenation, anti-aging skin products for age management and wrinkle removal, and I use them on everyone. I would keep using the one you use as a non-surgical facial rejuvenation program.
The tretinoins-RetinA and Tazarotine are a bit more powerful skin exfoliation […]
