Dear Dr. Seckel, Hello, I had a dermabrasion 7 months ago. Being that I’m Asian, I suffer now from color variation between my face (new lighter) and my neck (old darker). Is there any form of lasers or treatments out there that could help diminish this line? I know it will likely not ever go away fully, but just anything to help minimize the difference Thank you! Donna, New York, NY.

Dear Donna, Hypo pigmentation following dermabrasion of Asian skin is a common problem. Some pigment may return after 2 years, at that point you will know the final result. Newer less intense laser skin peeling or laser skin rejuvenation techniques can be used judiciously on the neck to try to lessen the difference-but laser peel […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 42 years old, and have some “sun” or “age” spots on my face, along with some fine lines and wrinkles developing and loosening skin on my neck. Is there a treatment I can do at home to help improve these signs of aging? Do you recommend in office treatment over home treatment? I am not interested in a face-lift at this time. I would like to eliminate the fine lines and wrinkles and give my skin a fresh new look. Thank you Laura, Peabody, MA.

Dear Laura, Thank you for your question. The most important home treatments for pigment removal, age spots, sun spots, fine lines and wrinkle removal is sun block, antioxidant vitamins, not smoking, and a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and avoiding animal fats. I also recommend a good prescription anti-aging cream with pigment removal agents such […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have one dark spot on my face under my left eye. I am using tri-luma skin crème. Should I treat the spot or the whole face? I would like to know what you think about lasers for people with medium to dark skin? Would lasers still be a good idea? I only have one dark spot that I really need help with but the tri-luma is turning the area around the scar lighter do you have any suggestions? Am I using it wrong? Will the laser treat this problem too? What is IPL and Photo facial rejuvenation? Thank you, Claresse, Adelanto, CA.

Dear Claresse, Tri-luma skin cream is excellent for removal of pigment and removal of brown spots and skin pigmentation. Try the Tri-luma just on the dark brown spot for pigment removal that does not lighten the surrounding skin. Laser skin rejuvenation peels can be used on medium to dark skin but there is always risk […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a 30yr Indian woman with a dark complexion. I would like to lighten my skin color to a very light shade. What would you recommend for skin bleaching, skin whitening or skin lightening. What is the most effective and safest way to begin this process. Also, are there procedures that would work? Thank you, Nancy, New York.

Dear Nancy, In my opinion there are no safe procedures to lighten dark skin to white skin. Very deep laser treatment can remove pigmentation but the result would be uneven color, possibly deep scarring and a very noticeable demarcation line on the neck where the dark skin would begin again. The best treatment to lighten […]

Dear Dr Seckel, I recently got your book and could not put it down-Very informative!! I have a prescription for Glyquin. I am 34 year old healthy female with a tendency for break outs and brown staining-I have brown patches on my cheeks that I attribute to the sun-My question is should I use the Glyquin on just the patches or a small amount on my entire face as I have read it will only lighten the pigmented areas? Also is there anything that will interact with the Glyguin that I should not put on my face?? Jenn, Milford, MA

Saturday, December 17th, 2005

Dear Jenn, Glyquin® is an excellent anti-aging cream with the added benefit of pigment control and wrinkle removal. It may be used over your entire face. Glyquin® contains not only Hydroquinone which controls pigment but also glycolic acid which is skin exfoliant and also stimulates the production of new collagen in the skin to help […]
