Dear Dr. Seckel, I have wrinkles on my facial skin around my eyes and cheeks, smile lines I guess you would call them. I take good care of my skin, use sun block and Retin A, have fair skin and am 50. I work out, take care of myself but I want to be proactive about the wrinkles and smile lines I see forming on my skin. I don’t want plastic surgery. My doctor recommended the Palomar Lux1540. He said it was like the Fraxel, a laser. I have a friend who had laser resurfacing and I don’t want to go through that, she was red for weeks. Can you tell me how the Palomar Lux 1540 works and if it is a good laser for removing wrinkles and smile lines? How bad is the down time? What about Botox for smile lines? Thanx, Beth, Boston

Dear Beth,

The good thing is that you are smiling, smile lines are definitely preferable to worry lines or frown lines. Keep smiling, worry about wrinkle removal later.

From the information you submitted it sounds as though you are taking the important skin care steps to prevent facial aging and photo aging, sun block, a […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I live in Boston, am 43 years old and very fit. I take good care of myself but I notice wrinkles forming around my eyes and cheeks and the skin around my jaw and under my neck s beginning to sag especially since I recently lost 10 pounds. I don’t want to have cosmetic surgery. I have fair skin and otherwise look younger than my age. What are the options for me other than cosmetic surgery? Thank you, Kerri, Boston, MA

today there are many very effective facial rejuvenation options for you other than cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have been researching into the use of laser surgery for facial blemishes, wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. In trying to locate a suitable surgeon it is difficult to ascertain which treatments are referred to by their real names and which are simply generic marketing terms. There appears to be new surgery which is non intrusive and is referred to as IPL. You refer to the laser genesis in other posts which appears to be this kind of treatment and I am wondering what differentiates this from FotoFacial, Photo rejuvenation etc. Are they essentially the same procedure? Thank you, Lee, San Diego, CA.

Dear Lee,
I agree with you that the topic of non-surgical laser and photo facial skin rejuvenation and wrinkle removal is a very confusing topic, made worse by the wide variety of branding of facial rejuvenation techniques. I have attempted in my book Save Your Face to organize and clarify this broad topic and the book […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Is it true that you can have a non-surgical face lift? Thank you, Mary Jo, Richmond, Virginia.

Monday, November 7th, 2005

Dear Mary Jo,
The short answer is no, a face lift, also called a rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess facial skin and tighten the face to give the face a more youthful appearance. The non-surgical face lift so frequently talked about is not a face lift but a skin tightening procedure.
The term […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, What is the most effective skin exfoliation method for removing facial wrinkles? I have tried face creams but they don’t work. I have also tried microdermabrasion but I still have wrinkles. I don’t want to have the down time associated with laser resurfacing. Is there anything else? Thanks, Audrey, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dear Audrey,
Yes there is a very effective method for skin exfoliation to remove facial wrinkles with minimal down time. It is the MicroLaserPeel® is a laser skin rejuvenation peel using the Sciton Erbium laser. The Erbium laser is called a cool laser because it does not burn the skin like the CO2 laser does, thus […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I want to get rid of the wrinkles on my face and look younger but I definitely do not want to have Facelift surgery. What are the best non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques for wrinkle removal? Thank you, Heather, Atlanta GA.

Dear Heather,
You have asked the question that most of my patients ask in my plastic surgery practice today.
Everyone wants to look younger and have wrinkle removal but most people do not want to have surgery. Happily there are many excellent non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques for wrinkle removal available today. Facial aging is not just the […]

“Dear Dr. Seckel, I heard about your fabulous new book “Save Your Face” and can’t wait to get a copy of it! I had a general question regarding skin creams. Since turning forty 2 years ago I have been using a glycolic acid cream (10%) on my face, thinking it was superior to tretinoin because I would get a little tingling feeling when applying it. I noticed you spoke about tretinoin as the best cream for facial wrinkles, but how do the alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic acid, compare? Should I switch to RetinA? Thanks for any info you can provide!? –Loriann, Billerica, MA

Dear Loriann,
Thank you for the email!
The alpha hydroxy acids, including glycolic acid are excellent skin rejuvenation, anti-aging skin products for age management and wrinkle removal, and I use them on everyone. I would keep using the one you use as a non-surgical facial rejuvenation program.
The tretinoins-RetinA and Tazarotine are a bit more powerful skin exfoliation […]
