Dear Dr. Seckel, I am interested in laser skin rejuvenation and have been reading about the new fractional skin rejuvenation. My doctor wants to do a series of Fraxel treatments on my face. I have some sun damage, brown spots, and fine lines and wrinkles mostly around my eyes and mouth. I know you have recommended laser resurfacing and I have also read about IPL. Can you tell me why fractional skin rejuvenation is better if it is? Thank you, Carla, Boston, Massachusetts

CO2 ablative laser resurfacing has been the “Gold Standard” for non surgical facial rejuvenation, skin rejuvenation and removal of facial skin wrinkles and photo aging since 1995. CO2 ablative laser resurfacing using the Ultrapulse CO2 laser can achieve very significant facial rejuvenation including wrinkle removal, skin tightening and removal of pigment and photo aging skin […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am interested in laser skin care. However I am confused about which laser skin care is best for me. I have fair skin, am 42, and have fine lines on my cheeks and wrinkles around my mouth (not a smoker) and crow’s feet. I wear sun block but do have some pigment on my cheeks worse on the left side of my face. There are so many laser skin care treatments advertised it is hard to know which laser to pick and who to trust. Can you help? Lori, Boston, MA

Dear Lori,
Laser skin care is a descriptive term used to denote a very wide variety of laser skin treatments, most commonly wrinkle removal, that are available to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. The most common laser skin care procedure or laser skin treatment available today is laser hair removal but there are many […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have had a series of fraxel treatments for melasma.I am very faired skinned and have melasma on both sides of my cheeks and down the jawline. After 5 treatments, a study, and 2 others at a higher strength with more pass, the result is worse than what I originally had. Skin is darker and the where the laser treatments were performed, the miasma appears to have spread. What do I do now, out of money and have worse darkening than when I started this treatment. Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks, Tracy, Vancouver, BC

Tracy,
I am surprised to hear of you difficulty following Fraxel laser treatments–Melasma has been the one condition that Fraxel laser skin rejuvenation has been most successful with. There is a reported 15% incidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentaion that is brown spots, after Fraxel, but that usually occurs on darker skin. Hopefully your Fraxel post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation will […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am one of the first baby boomers (60) in need of a good skin resurfacing on my face and around my eyes, I have checked out Fraxel Thermage and portrait plasma and cannot make up mind as to what procedure to use, I need little down time as I am a working person with not a lot of time to spare and also one that I can rely on to give me a better look. Thank you M

I use the LaserLyte Peel–also called the active FX laser by Lumenis–down time is truly 4-5 days-no more.

Dear Dr Seckel, My dermatologist recommends Fraxel for me to reduce wrinkles and skin sagging. I am interested in having this done but realized as I left the office that the procedure would not be performed by him but by an assistant aesthetician in his office. Would you recommend this–even if the assistant is well trained? Is there any reason why this should be done exclusively by the Doctor (since this isn’t surgery maybe there would be no problem)? Thank you, Elizabeth, Tucson, AZ

Fraxel for wrinkle removal and skin tightening have been disappointing

Dear Dr seckel, I had 4 Fraxel procedures about six months ago. At the direction > of my Dr’s office, I’ve been using hydroquinone since the treatments. > Although in some areas and in some ways my skin does look better, I now > have terrible discoloration on both sides of my face and some on my > forehead. Have you ever heard of this side effect? My Dr’s office insists > that it’s not due to the Fraxel but I believe that it is. I am olive > complected and have relatively sensitive skin. > Thanks for any info! Leslie, San Diego, CA

Dear Dr. Seckel, What is the difference between a MicroLaserPeel® and a Fraxel®. I have wrinkles, brown spots and pigment and other early facial aging changes. I want the best facial rejuvenation procedure and I want a non-surgical facial rejuvenation program that works. I don’t want a face-lift. Thanks, Betty, Boston, MA.

Dear Betty,
Both the MicroLaserPeel®, done with the Sciton® Profile Erbium laser, and the Fraxel®, done with the Fraxel® laser by Reliant Technologies® are non-surgical facial rejuvenation laser skin treatments used to remove wrinkles, pigment and other facial aging changes on the surface of the facial skin. With repeated applications wrinkle removal and pigment removal are […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, About 6 years ago I had CO2 laser resurfacing. Acne scars were softened and I loved the results. I use Retin-A daily because even at 40, my skin is as oily as it ever was. Now I am viewing pimples and wrinkles. Is CO2 laser resurfacing an option after 6 years? I liked your book and I join all the people cheering that something so clear with the advantages/disadvantages has been published. Thank you so much. Deb, Hampstead, NH.

Dear Deb,
Thank you for the kind words about Save Your Face.
You certainly can have laser resurfacing or laser skin rejuvenation a second time if the skin is healthy and has plenty of oil glands and hair follicles to provide cells to heal the skin surface after the laser peel or laser resurfacing.
However there are many […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Can I have a Fraxel procedure done after an injectable filler like Restylane has been used? If not how long do I have to wait? Andrew Norfolk, Va

Restylane® injection and I would be comfortable after a 6 week wait, to do Fraxel®

Dear Dr. Seckel, I had laser resurfacing done on my entire face two years ago and most of the sun damage is gone. However, I have had several brown spots return on my cheek and on the top of my eyelid, which is a large patch. When I asked my doctor he said that this is part of my skin. Do you think it would be a waste of time to try and have these areas lasered again? The areas do lighten up but when I try and use a self-tanner those areas really jump out at you? Also, in your book you recommend Retin A but I was wondering what you thought of Renova for treating lines under my eyes and possibly the brown spots? Thank you, Jenny, Portland, OR.

Dear Jenny,
I would not do laser skin rejuvenation or laser resurfacing a second time, your skin could become too white or hypo pigmented and you risk having a demarcation line at the neck where the skin that has not been lasered stands out.
The best skin cream for your situation for pigment removal and wrinkle removal […]
