Dear Dr. Seckel, I am considering laser liposuction. I have a small amount of belly fat and loose skin on my tummy after having 3 children. I also would like a little fat removed from my hips and thighs. I have read a lot about laser liposuction and it sound like it is a better treatment than the older liposuction. I have read that skin tightening is better with laser liposuction and the skin is left smoother. I have read about SmartLipo, Cool lipo, SlimLipo and Lipotherme. I am not sure which ones are available in the Boston area. They all sound great on the internet. Is there a big difference between one laser liposuction machine and another? How does one make the right choice? Thank you, Michelle, Boston, Massachusetts.

There is a great deal of enthusiasm for laser liposuction today. There are some potential advantages to the laser liposuction technique, but the most important thing for you is to find an experienced, expert, board certified plastic surgeon that you are comfortable with and trust.

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am scheduled to have Smartlipo laser liposuction on my tummy. The doctor said I could return to work the same day. I have read your blog about Slimlipo which you seem to prefer. What are the risks of laser liposuction? My doctor assured me that laser liposuction was safe. I have searched the net and found nothing about laser liposuction risks and complications. I have a pre op appointment next week and assume I will be told the risks then. I know all surgeries have risks and I am surprised I can find nothing on the net about the risks of laser liposuction. I have read about the risks of regular liposuction but no information seems to be available about laser liposuction. Thanks for your help, Lindsay, Boston, Massachusetts.

Dear Lindsay, Thank you for your email about the risks of laser liposuction. Laser liposuction is a new procedure so there is not much information about problems, risks, and complications published yet. Much of the marketing for laser liposuction, laser liposculpture and laser body sculpting give the impression that the new procedure is a safe, [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have read that you can eliminate a double chin with laser liposuction. Is this true? How long is the recovery? Is laser liposuction painful? I was thinking of having double chin surgery, but if laser liposuction is better, I would rather not have surgery. Thank you, Cindy, Boston, Massachusetts.

Dear Cindy, Thank you for your question about laser liposuction for the double chin. Before now plastic surgery was required to eliminate a double chin, but new laser liposuction technology can melt neck fat and tighten neck skin to eliminate your double chin. See results of this remarkable new technology in the before and after [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I had liposuction surgery of my abdomen and had difficult recovery. I now have bumps or lumps and some depressions in the skin of my tummy. My surgeon says they are contour deformities and are a normal risk of liposuction. I have read that laser liposuction leaves the skin smoother. Can anything be done to remove the bumps and smooth the skin after liposuction? Thank You, Mary Beth, Riverside, California.

Dear Mary Beth, I am sorry to hear of your difficult recovery after liposuction. Skin irregularities-lumps, bumps, and depressions are common risks of liposuction and are very distressing. I would have to examine you to tell if anything can be done to improve the liposuction contour deformities. The laser liposuction, in my experience, does tend [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am writing you about laser liposuction. I had liposuction of my tummy a year ago, and now I have lumps and wavy lines on my skin. Can the laser remove these irregularities from my tummy? My doctor called them contour deformities and said they are normal and I should accept them. I don’t like them and can’t wear my bikini; I am so embarrassed about how my tummy looks. Please help! Thanks, Celeste, Los Angeles, California.

Dear Celeste, Thank you for your email. One of the best applications of laser liposuction is to treat contour deformities or skin irregularities and lumps after liposuction. The new laser liposuction tip has a blinking light which is visible through the skin, thus the doctor can see where the laser fiber is and accurately dissolve [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am considering laser liposuction of my hips. I have heard of Smartlipo, Coolipo and SlimLipo. Which do you use for liposuction on the hips? I don’t want buttock lift; just remove some fat from the saddlebags. Thank, Martha, Mansfield, Massachusetts.

Dear Martha, Thank you for your question about laser liposuction. You are very lucky that you have waited until now to consider having liposuction, or liposculpture body contouring. The new laser liposuction techniques are a vast improvement over traditional methods. The new laser technology melts fat and tightens skin resulting in a much gentler liposculpture [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am very fit and not overweight. I have a small amount of fat on the side of my hips in the saddlebag area. I am considering liposuction. Is the new laser liposuction better than regular liposuction, especially for a person who is not overly fat or obese? Thanks, Jane, Boston, Massachusetts.

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Dear Jane, Thank you for your question. In my opinion one of the major advantages of the laser liposuction technique is that laser liposuction, unlike traditional liposuction, can be safely used on smaller fat deposits in thinner people. The worry with traditional liposuction is that the suction process can take out too much fat near [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, How can I get rid of my double chin? I saw a picture of me from the side and my neck looked awful. I have to lose my double chin! I am a fit person and not fat but my neck looks fat from the side. I don’t want a neck lift-I don’t want scars. Is there a laser procedure for the double chin that works? Thank you, Kelly, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Kelly, I hate my double chin too. Millions of people do. A tight neck line and jaw line create a beautiful, youthful and fit look to the face. Previously a surgical neck or face lift was required to correct a double chin and or jowls (see before and after face lift picture below): Today, [...]
