Dear Dr. Seckel, I had breast implants several years ago and I have bumps on my implants that I can feel. Sometimes in the right light I can see a bump or fold along the bottom of my breast that feels like the implant. Should I be concerned? Thank you, Mary, Boston, Massachusetts.

Dear Mary,
You should have your doctor examine you to be sure you do not have a breast lump.
It is common especially after breast augmentation with saline breast implants to feel folds or bumps in the breast implants. Sometimes they are visible. The breast implant bump or fold is usually a fold in the [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 43 years old and have had breast implants for 10 years. My implants are saline implants and they look great but I can feel folds in the implants at the bottom and side of my breasts. I have heard that the new silicone gel breast implants feel more natural and are less likely to develop folds than the saline breast implants. Is that true? Are the new silicone gel breast implants safe? How difficulty is it to replace the old saline implants with the new silicone gel implants. Thank you, Caitlin, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Caitlin,
Thank you for your email. Breast augmentation or breast enlargement with breast implants is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. Results are usually excellent and patient satisfaction is very high.

Above: Before and after breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is also frequently done in combination with a breast lift for patients who have [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I want to have breast implants but am uncertain whether to have breast augmentation with Silicone breast implants or Saline breast implants. I live in Boston and the surgeon I saw does not use the Silicone breast implants. Are there safety issues? I hear the Silicone implants feel more natural. I am 23 and have had small breasts all of my life. Thank you, Doreen, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Doreen,
Thank you for your email. Silicone breast implants have recently been approved for use by the FDA and many patients are choosing to have the Silicone implants because of the more natural feeling after placement of the implant. Boston is a conservative town and many plastic surgeons are still only using the Saline implants. [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a 30 year old mother of three wonderful children living in Boston. Although my children are my greatest joy, the effect of three pregnancies on my body has left me feeling less than confident about my body. My breasts are smaller, have sagged, and I have loose skin on my tummy, especially above my c-section scar. I have heard about the mommy makeover and am interested but want to know exactly what the mommy makeover is and if it is safe. I have read that the mommy makeover involves a breast lift and breast augmentation and a tummy tuck. Can they really be done safely at the same time? Thank you, Paula, Boston, MA

Dear Paula,

Thank you for your question. Interestingly, women in your age group who have had children and share your concerns are the largest group of patients seeking Breast Augmentation in my Boston Plastic Surgery Practice, and have been for many years. The use of the name “mommy makeover” has brought a great deal [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am considering breast enlargement or breast augmentation with silicon gel breast implants but am concerned about the safety of breast augmentation with silicone gel implants. I live in Boston, and my doctor says silicone gel breast implants are safe but I would like your opinion. I am told that the saline breast implants do not feel as natural as the silicone breast implants. I am very fit and healthy, but my breasts have become much smaller after having my three children. I do not have sagging breasts so I don’t think I need a breast lift. I would appreciate your opinion. I don’t want to have breast augmentation with silicone gel breast implants now and wish I had saline breast implants later. Thank you, Renee, Boston, MA.

Dear Renee,

There are many factors to think about when deciding whether to have breast enlargement or breast augmentation with silicone gel breast augmentation or saline breast augmentation.

The newer silicone gel breast implants have been approved by the FDA and have been available since January 2007. Many women share your concern about the safety [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 33 years old and in great physical shape. I have two children and have worked very hard to regain my shape after my pregnancies. The only problem is that my breasts and tummy are loose and sagging. No matter how hard I work out I just cannot firm these areas. I have read about tummy tuck and breast augmentation; can these be done at the same time? Also I have read about the lollipop breast lift can that be done at the same time? How do you decide if a breast lift is needed or just a breast augmentation. Please help! Thank you, Denise, Boston, MA

Most women who have had children notice lax skin on there tummy’s and experience laxity of the breasts and no amount of hard work can completely firm these areas back to the way they were before pregnancy.

Dear Dr. Seckel, I know your site is mainly about the face but I want information on breast surgery. I am 35, live in Boston, have had 2 kids and my breasts have gotten smaller and sag a bit. I have read about breast augmentation and the mastopexy breast lift but I really do not want visible scars on my breasts. Is it possible that a breast augmentation will also give the breast a bit of a lift? Thank You, Denise, Boston, MAI

But for most people the breast augmentation procedure can correct the post pregnancy breast appearance without the need for a lift or mastopexy.
