Dear Dr. Seckel, Wow, it is refreshing to see such a well-informed site! It seems I have, ‘Naso-jugal Fold or Tear Trough Deformity-the True Dark Circle Under the Eye’ to use your words. I am not sure if you cover this topic under blepharoplasty in your book which I just ordered, but why are the fillers, namely, Restylane not one of your favorites under the eyes? If no vision problems are first observed, are there possible long-term risks to the eyes? Are there other substances, within Restylane beside Hyaluronic Acid that are dangerous to the eyes in your opinion? Many thanks. Michael, NJ.

Worse, because fillers are easy to use, many doctors with no experience in eyelid surgery are tempted to use them, out of ignorance or lack of concern

Dear Dr. Seckel I am a Canadian living in working in Asia. To get to the point I have dark (purple color) under my eyes closer to the nasal side. However, the darkness does not extend across the entire area under each eye. It goes down more than over. I would say over almost halfway. Likewise, the skin area in the ‘pocket’ where the upper eyelid and the nasal/forehead area meet is purple/dark. I really want to eliminate this as it is getting to the point where I avoid mirrors. I have had some laser treatment here recently. I am not sure of the procedure’s name, but to explain it a laser ‘zapped’ me (hurt too) a several times in the problem areas. I was told this was to promote collagen development and help to reduce the color intensity. However, after two sessions (a month apart, as suggested), I haven’t seen a result. Would a blepharoplasty help? I will be going to Toronto in April, and if a remedy is in sight I would be willing to travel anywhere necessary during that time. Thank you, Michael

Dear Michael,
The dark purple eyelid skin is caused by the color of the muscle underneath the skin showing through, is normal and cannot be corrected with a laser skin eyelid rejuvenation technique.
However the dark purple color at the bottom of the lower eyelid near the nose which creates dark circles under the […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 42 years old and in great shape but people tell me I look tired. I have eyelid bags and dark circles under my eyes and have read about blepharoplasty. Is there any non-surgical way to remove eyelid bags? A friend of mine had a blepharoplasty done and I can see the scar. Thank you, Denise, Boston, MA.

eyelid rejuvenation procedure called blepharoplasty is the third most common plastic surgery operation performed in the United States-so your concerns about

Hello Doctor Seckel. I am 27 years old. I have had dark circles under my eyes for almost all of my life. I am tired of using concealer to attempt to cover them and have no success. I do not necessarily have bags under my eyes as in puffiness or extra skin. The skin under my eyes just seems to be very thin. I do have a hypothyroidism problem that I am treating with medication and am also taking birth control pills. What would you recommend for treatment? I have heard about fat injections, blepharoplasty, and laser treatment. I know I will need to consult a doctor in person; I’m just trying to decide what would be best? Please help….Nadine, South Korea

I do not do filler and fat injections around the eyes-I think it is dangerous

Hi Dr. Seckel. I have had hereditary hollowness under my eyes that really bother me. I was wondering if there was any non-surgical method to eliminate my dark circles. I have heard that there could be some sort of injection that required little recovery time, but I could be wrong. What are the names of these surgeries that could help eliminate these circles and about how much do they cost? Thanks so much, Katherine, Arlington Heights, IL

Dear Katherine,
There is no good non-surgical facial rejuvenation or eyelid rejuvenation method method to correct dark circles under the eyes other than cover up with Cover mark® or Dermablend®-2 excellent products.
I do not do filler injections around the eyes for eyelid rejuvenation to correct the tired look or dark circles under the eyes. Some Doctors […]

Hello Dr. Seckel, I am 27 years old and have noticed worsening of dark circles under my eyes just in the last two months. Extra sleep does not help and I’m considering IPL for old skin blemishes - can this help the circles as well? if not, is there anything else i can do? Vicky, Canada

Friday, March 10th, 2006

Dear Vicki,
IPL or photo facial will not help dark circles under the eyes. Usually an eyelid surgery procedure called transconjunctival laser blepharoplasty with arcus marginalis release and fat repositioning is required to correct dark circles under the eyes. I have written a lot about this procedure. Check the archives on the right hand side of […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Hi there, just a quick question…I have very bad dark circles, it actually looks like I have black eyes. The skin is very thin under the eyes and u can see the veins prominently. I get comments on a daily basis such as are you ok? you look very tired, and not uncommonly ‘have you been punched/injured etc?’. As you can imagine it’s very bad for my self-esteem and I am on a mission to correct this. I have researched and it seems that fillers are the only option; this would plump up the skin therefore hopefully making the veins less prominent. Is this a safe option? Thank you, Carl, Bath

I do not recommend filler injection around the eyes-I worry

Dear Dr. Seckel, I HAVE DARK CIRCLE UNDER MY EYES, KIND OF HEREDITY BUT MY SISTER DOENT SHOW SUCH DARKNESS AS ME, I ALSO WEAR SPECTACLES AND I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY TREAT POSSIBLY ANY LASER TREATMENT AVAILABLE FOR THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. Thank you, Shaalini, London, England.

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Dear Shaalini,
If by dark circles under your eyes you mean the color of your eyelid skin, Laser skin rejuvenation treatment such as laser resurfacing, laser skin peel, laser peel, and other types of laser skin care can improve dark circles under the eyes if the dark color is caused by pigment from medications such as […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I have dark circle under my eyes primarily as a result of the veins underneath my eyes. Also, I should mention that I have tan Asian skin type. Almost a year ago, I had laser treatment for my dark circle. After the treatment, I can see some of the veins that were visible before no longer there, however there is still the dark color appeared underneath my eyes. Can you please give me some advise on how to reduce these dark circles. Is there any laser out there that is safe to treat dark circles for someone with a tan skin type like myself. Please help. Thank You, Tuyet, Richmond, VA.

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Dear Tuyet,
The quick answer is no, nothing can be done to change the dark color of the eyelid skin, unless the dark color is hyperpigmentation from sun or medication. Since you have already had laser skin rejuvenation or resurfacing I assume the color that is left is your natural skin color. I would not do […]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 29 years and I have eyelid bags from last 12 years. I am not interested in doing blepharoplasty or fat injection or collagen injection. By radiofrequency can eyelid bags get removed or get reduced? Thanks, Kanchan, India

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Dear Kanchan,
Unfortunately only blepharoplasty or the eyelid surgery known as eyelid lift or eyelid plasty can effectively remove eyelid bags and dark circles under the eyes and tighten skin. Blepharoplasty alone does not remove eyelid wrinkles.
Radiofrequency has been used to remove eyelid wrinkles and tighten eyelid skin, but to be effective, radiofrequency needs to go […]
