Dear Dr. Seckel, I had a tummy tuck 6 months ago and the scar on my abdomen is red and itchy. I did not have the bikini tummy tuck you write about but I wish I had. Is there anything I can do about the scar? Thank you, Denise, Boston, Massachusetts

Dear Denise,
Red itchy scars are called hypertrophic scars and are common following abdominoplasty. They are more common when:

The skin is pulled too tight
Too much skin is removed
You are too active and stretch or stress the skin soon after [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, Can you tell me what the bikini tuck is? I have had two kids, I am 38 and very fit. However I cannot get rid of the excess skin on my tummy. I run, work out and do abdominal exercises but that role above my bikini won’t go away. Please help, Cindy, Boston, Massachusetts.

Dear Cindy,
The bikini tuck or bikini tummy tuck is a modified abdominoplasty which places the scar in a position which is hidden when you wear a bikini. The results are excellent and you can still wear a bikini when you go to the beach after your tummy tuck.

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am a 30 year old mother of three wonderful children living in Boston. Although my children are my greatest joy, the effect of three pregnancies on my body has left me feeling less than confident about my body. My breasts are smaller, have sagged, and I have loose skin on my tummy, especially above my c-section scar. I have heard about the mommy makeover and am interested but want to know exactly what the mommy makeover is and if it is safe. I have read that the mommy makeover involves a breast lift and breast augmentation and a tummy tuck. Can they really be done safely at the same time? Thank you, Paula, Boston, MA

Dear Paula,

Thank you for your question. Interestingly, women in your age group who have had children and share your concerns are the largest group of patients seeking Breast Augmentation in my Boston Plastic Surgery Practice, and have been for many years. The use of the name “mommy makeover” has brought a great deal [...]

Dear Dr. Seckel, I am 33 years old and in great physical shape. I have two children and have worked very hard to regain my shape after my pregnancies. The only problem is that my breasts and tummy are loose and sagging. No matter how hard I work out I just cannot firm these areas. I have read about tummy tuck and breast augmentation; can these be done at the same time? Also I have read about the lollipop breast lift can that be done at the same time? How do you decide if a breast lift is needed or just a breast augmentation. Please help! Thank you, Denise, Boston, MA

Most women who have had children notice lax skin on there tummy’s and experience laxity of the breasts and no amount of hard work can completely firm these areas back to the way they were before pregnancy.

Dr. Seckel, Is the Fraxil laser an option for treating stretch marks? Thank you, Michelle, Houston, Texas

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Dear Michelle,
No laser, including the Fraxel® laser has yet been shown to effectively remove stretch marks in the skin. While lasers can lighten the color of skin stretch marks, and increase the production of collagen in the dermis to possibly reduce the depth of the stretch mark, the results to my eye are not satisfactory.

“Dear Dr. Seckel, What treatment options are available that will help to eliminate stretch marks in African-American skin?” – Karen, Los Angeles, CA

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

Dear Karen,
Thank you for your question. The short answer is that there are no satisfactory easy, non-surgical solutions for stretch marks in any skin type, African American, Caucasian, Asian, or other.
Stretch marks are caused by disruption and damage to the collagen in the dermis of the skin, the layer just beneath the outer surface of [...]
