Dear Dr. Seckel, I HAVE DARK CIRCLE UNDER MY EYES, KIND OF HEREDITY BUT MY SISTER DOENT SHOW SUCH DARKNESS AS ME, I ALSO WEAR SPECTACLES AND I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY TREAT POSSIBLY ANY LASER TREATMENT AVAILABLE FOR THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. Thank you, Shaalini, London, England.

Dear Shaalini,

If by dark circles under your eyes you mean the color of your eyelid skin, Laser skin rejuvenation treatment such as laser resurfacing, laser skin peel, laser peel, and other types of laser skin care can improve dark circles under the eyes if the dark color is caused by pigment from medications such as birth control pills or pregnancy.

However if the dark circles under the eyes are actually dark purple eyelid color lasers should not be used as the laser can lighten the pigment too much and cause hypo pigmentation that would be very noticeable. Covermark® and Dermablend® are two excellent make ups which can help this problem.

Another condition referred to as dark circles under the eyes is the naso-jugal fold. This type of dark circle is a depression or hollow beneath the lower eyelid over the bone of the eye socket. This type of dark circle under the eye requires an eyelid rejuvenation procedure called a blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery with an arcus marginalis release and fat grafting which I do with a laser in a procedure called the transconjunctival laser blepharoplasty with arcus marginalis release and fat repositioning. This type of dark circles under the eyes usually occurs as we age but some people have this problem at a young age.

Please check my archives on the right of the screen and click on bags and dark circles under the eyes or follow this link. I have written extensively about dark circles under the eyes.

Thank you for your question.
